ILLUSTRATION REPORT ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP. BAND 3

ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP. BAND 3 (SILVIA)

TASK 1. USE OF LANGUAGE 0 1 2 3
This sample fits the band 3 descriptor. The candidate has a continuous speech, although she still
makes some pauses. Comprehension is easy and effortless. His linguistic repertoire makes him
effective and clear in what he says. He does not express himself through groups of words and
brief statements, nor is his speech discontinuous as Band 2 states. There are some errors (band 3)
that in some cases autocorrect. As the descriptor says...
• Is able to express facts, desires, preferences, moods or evaluations (I like..., I want..., I
think... because...): "My *favorite color is white... it's white because I think white clothes
are very nice"; "I always play the piano at home because I like music very much".
• Shows control of basic grammatical rules (indicative tenses, agreement, articles,
possessives, basic periphrases): "My name is"; "I study in..."; "I am very young"; "I think I
am nice and sociable"; "My mother likes to read books".
• May make mistakes and/or some pause: "I am not very tall"; "my *favorite color is
white.... white".

TASK 1. PERFORMANCE OF THE TASK 0 1 2 3

She talks about all the points she needs to address and includes more information than required
about herself and her family: her physical description ("I am *not very tall and I am very young"),
her favorite color, how many are in her family ("In my family there are three people: *my mother,
my father and me"), what she likes to do in her free time ("I like to listen to music") and her family
("*my father likes to play video games and *my mother likes to read books").
• Name: "My name is Silvia".
• Age: "I am 14 years old".
• Nationality: "I am Chinese".
• Languages spoken: "I speak Chinese, English and a little Spanish."
• Studies: "I study at the school of foreign languages".
• Her character: "I am friendly and sociable".

TASK 2. USE OF LANGUAGE 0 1 2 3

The candidate is in band 3 because she has a reasonably continuous discourse and also expresses
preferences and makes some assessment. Shows control of basic grammatical rules. It makes
pauses, but too brief to place it in a band 2. It does not use groups of words, or short sentences,
as the band 2 descriptor states, nor does it make errors or have influence from other languages.
Understanding the speech is effortless. As the descriptor says:
• Shows control of basic grammatical rules (tenses of indicative, agreement, articles,
possessives, basic periphrases): "my school is very nice and big"; "I like this square and I
always (pause) have... do sports in this square"; "I always get up at... at seven..."
• May make mistakes and/or some pause: "In my free time I always *play with.... play with
my friends (pause) eh... eh... in the square of... my... school."
• Is able to express facts, desires, preferences, moods or evaluations: "I like the square at
my school because it is very big".

TASK 2. PERFORMANCE OF THE TASK 0 1 2 3

DELE A1E. EIO
ILLUSTRATION REPORT ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP. BAND 3
The candidate talks about the three points: school (she talks about where she studies, what her
school is like and what she likes about it), schedules (she talks about when she gets up and goes
to bed) and free time (what she likes to do and what she does with her friends) within the topic
"Daily Routine", she adds some detail about what the square (courtyard?) of her school and that
she plays sports there.

TASK 3. USE OF LANGUAGE 0 1 2 3

The candidate responds effectively to the interviewer's questions, from which she needs
practically no help, so she would be in band 3. It does not have comprehension difficulties as
stated in band 2. He has a grammatical control that allows him to construct simple sentences
(band 3) and does not express himself with groups of words or short statements (band 2). As the
descriptor says...
• Uses, with errors, a simple linguistic repertoire, sufficient to express him/herself on
everyday topics and to manage, with some efficiency, in the given situation: "I don't like
it because I think it's not very interesting"; "My favorite subject is English because my
English teacher is very kind and nice and the English class is very interesting";
• Shows control of basic grammatical rules to construct simple sentences, although she
makes some errors: ""Chinese, because my Chinese teacher is not very nice and is very
demanding"; "I always travel...and.... I... traveled *in China".

TASK 3. PERFORMANCE OF THE TASK 0 1 2 3

Answer all questions and add ratings or comments. Ask the two questions. For all these reasons,
it would be in band 3.

INTERVIEWER. USE OF LANGUAGE 0 1 2 3

The candidate performs effectively in all three tasks. It does not communicate by means of groups
of words and brief statements as described in band 2. The linguistic repertoire is simple but
sufficient to provide the information effectively. For all these reasons, it would be in band 3.

INTERVIEWER. PERFORMANCE OF THE TASK 0 1 2 3

It would be in band 3 because it solves all three tasks and in all three it provides assessments,
comments or opinions.
