Behavior Feedback Chart
Teachers can use the chart with just a few targeted students or with the whole
class. The behavior chart can be put on individual desks, or posted on a chart, or
adhered on a whiteboard or bulletin board. Use velcro dots to adhere stars to
student charts. You can use them on student desks for easy access as you walk
around the room—and pull or add stars as positive or negative behavior is
observed. It’s immediate and allows me to quietly whisper feedback to a student.

Every student starts with 3 stars each morning. The goal is to still have 3 stars by
lunchtime and then again 3 or more stars by the end of the day. After rules,
routines, procedures and transitions have been learned, modeled and practiced,
this behavior charting system can be introduced to students. Make sure students
understand that stars will be taken when bad choices are made, but can be
redeemed as soon as behavior is back on track. Consistency at the beginning is
important so that students learn expectations. Feedback is immediate and visible.
Soon students will be keeping and earning those extra stars. The 2 extra stars are
earned by those students showing exceptional behavior.

Many classrooms use the rainbow colors behavior chart with clothespins. This
feedback chart can also be used in conjunction with the rainbow color chart. The
only difference is that students start the day with no stars. As positive behaviors
and good choices are observed, stars are earned. When a student has earned 3
stars, they may clip up a color on the rainbow chart. The 3 stars are removed and
they begin to earn stars for the next color. If a student earns no stars by lunch,
they clip down a color. The stars are a constant visual reminder to the student
about how they are doing and how soon they can clip up another color. It may
seem like additional work for the teacher at first, but many have found that
behaviors improved more quickly with the immediate, visual feedback of the stars.

Three stars at the end of the day was a GOOD day and needs to be celebrated.
Those students who earned 4 or 5 stars had a GREAT day and would be the
students who were the role models and exceeded expectations. Weekly or
monthly stars earned could be logged on the data sheets included.
