The text How Soccer Explains the American Culture Wars shows how something as

simple as a passtime can be used to reflect on the nation's views on globalization and outside

influences and cultures. Applying this same idea through the lens of popular American rapper

Playboi Carti we can gain a deeper understanding of how America views Globalization and

acceptance of other cultures and the shift in this view.

Playboi Cartis music notarized by his distinctive trap based sound and minimalistic lyrics

is an evolution of the traditional hip hop sound. In the late 2010s Playboi carti gained popularity

with his hit songs like “magnolia” and “wokeuplikethis*” and has continued to grow in

popularity. He is known for his repetitive and adlib based style that incorporates mumble rap

elements.

America's reception of playboi carti’s music and modern day hip hop can be seen as a

change in its relationship with outside cultures and influences. Playboi carti represents the need

for America to change and the demand and popularity of his music proves this. The music itself

pulls from various different cultures and subgenres including fashion, hip hop and African

American culture. The popularity of Playboi Carti shows how some Americans embrace change

and adapt to different ideas making it a positive example of globalization.

However not all Americans are so accepting of Carti’s music. Some people dislike Carti’s

deviation from lyrical hip hop, dismissing the music as overly simplistic and focusing too much

on materialism. This criticism can be seen as a rejection of globalization since a portion of the

American population is fearful of these external influences to their culture seeing it as an

increase in consumerism and a loss of traditionalism and authenticity.

Playboi Cartis music highlights the ability for music to adapt and pull from different

cultures; it also faces major criticism for deviating from traditional hip hop. The fans and
popularity of his music show how globalization is being more and more accepted in American

society.
