TUBERCULOSIS
Tuberculosis - is an infectious disease that can cause infection in the lungs
or other tissues.

It commonly affects the lungs, but it can also affect other organs like the
spine, brain or kidneys.

The word “tuberculosis” comes from a Latin word for "nodule" or


something that sticks out.

chest pain, severe coughing, and a range of
other symptoms.

HOW DOES MYCOBACTERIUM ENTER
THE BODY
The process of becoming infected with TB begins when

the person inhales Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, this
will begin to multiply in the small air sacs of the lungs.

Some TB bacteria then enter the bloodstream and


spread throughout the body. Usually within 2 to 8
weeks, the immune system intervenes, halting
multiplication and preventing further spread.

If, however, the immune system cannot keep the TB
bacteria under control, the TB bacteria continue to
multiply and destroy tissue.

HOW IS PTB SPREAD:

Spread through the air from one person to another.
Spread into the air when a person with infectious PTB disease of the lungs or throat
coughs, speaks, or sings.
People nearby may breathe in these TB germs and become infected.

WHO IS AT RISK GETTING PTB: PART 2


People who have contact with someone who has infectious TB disease.
People who were born in or who frequently travel to countries where TB disease is
common.
Health care workers and others who work or live in places at high risk for TB
transmission.
