Learning Outcome No. 1: Preparation and Tack Up: SMAW PIPE

WELDING

Learning Activities Special Instructions

1. Read the procedure in

activity for preparation and
tack up of steel pipe

2. Perform step-by-step
procedure with caution.
 Try to pass the self-check
3. Rate the quality of your weld for preparation and tack
using the marking schedule. up of carbon steel pipe.

4. If you did not pass the

marking points, repeat the
activity for preparation and
tack up of carbon steel pipe.

5. When you are ready, you

can proceed to the next LO

ACTIVITY 1.1
Single-V Butt Joint Flat Position (1G)

1. Mild steel pipe 6” diameter, schedule 40-60 (2pcs)

2. Electrode, E-6011, 3.2mm diameter.

Tools and Equipment

1. AC welding machine with accessories
2. chipping hammer
3. steel brush
4. welding helmet/shield

Welding Procedure

Sandwich the electrode core

wire between the two pieces
of carbon steel pipe.
1.

2. Preset the pipe for

angular distortion.

3. Lay the pipe on the

table and check the
alignment of both
pipe.
4. Tack the backing
plate on each side of
the steel pipe.
Without removing the
electrode core wire in
between.
5. Remove the slag and clean.

1. Do this on the other pipe

then tack the pipe using
E6011 electrode. Do this to
the remaining backing plate.

NOTE: Maintain proper

alignment

NOTE: Wear safety glasses

when cleaning and
removing slag.

ASSESSMENT (SELF-CHECK) 1.1

The marking system below will guide you in assessing the quality of your weld.
Follow the marking schedule in rating your weld and record the marks on the
table provided for the purpose. Subtract the total marks from 15 points, which
is the highest rating to determine your final points.

THE PASSING MARK IS 15 POINTS

MARKING TABLE

CRITERIA MARKS SUBTRACTED

1. Proper use of tools and mat’s

2. Safety
3. Pipe alignment

TOTAL MARKS SUBTRACTED

FINAL POINTS = 15 - Total Marks Subtracted

15 - ______________________
FINAL POINTS = ______________________
MARKING SCHEDULE

1. Proper use of tools and Mat’ls

Subtract 5 mark if the student did not use tools and materials properly.

2. Safety

Subtract 5 marks for each if the student did not observe his safety upon
doing his practical task

3. Pipe alignment

Subtract 3 marks if it has at least 2 mm difference in the alignment.

Subtract 5 marks if it has at least 3-5 mm difference in the alignment.
