Maximum and Minimum Values
The following test, is analogous to the Second Derivative

If D=0, the test gives no information:
ex 1) f (x, y) = x2 + y4.
f x(x, y) = 2x (= 0), f y(x, y) = 4y3 (= 0),
f xx(x, y) = 2; f xy(x, y) = 0, f yy(x, y) = 12y2
so the only critical point is (0, 0) and, D(0, 0) = ... = 0.
But,
f (x, y) = x2 + y4
0 for all values of x and y.
Therefore f (0, 0) = 0 is a local minimum, and in fact it is the
absolute minimum of f .
14
If D=0, the test gives no information:
ex 2) f (x, y) = - x2 - y4.
f x(x, y) = -2x (= 0), f y(x, y) = -4y3 (= 0),
f xx(x, y) = -2; f xy(x, y) = 0, f yy(x, y) = -12y2
so the only critical point is (0, 0) and, D(0, 0) = ... = 0.

f x(x, y) = -2x (= 0), f y(x, y) = -4y3 (= 0),

so the only critical point is (0, 0) and, D(0, 0) = ... = 0.

f (x, y) = - x2 - y4
≤ 0 for all values of x and y.
Therefore f (0, 0) = 0 is a local Maximum, and in fact it is the

Example 1
Therefore f (1, 3) = 4 is a local minimum, and ....
Step1) f x = 2x - 2 = 0, f y = 2y - 6 = 0,
∴ critical pt. (x, y) = (1, 3).
Step2) f xx = 2, f xy = 0, f yy = 2,
∴ D(1, 3) = f xx f yy - f xy2 = 4 > 0
Step3) f xx = 2 > 0, D(1, 3) > 0
∴ f (1, 3)= 4 ( a local min.)
z = x2 + y2 – 2x – 6y + 14
21
Example 3
f (x, y) = x 4 + y 4 – 4xy + 1.
Sol)
Step1) f x = 4x3 – 4y = 0, f y = 4y3 – 4x = 0,
∴ critical pt. (x, y) = (0, 0), (1, 1), (-1, -1).
Step2) f xx = 12x2, f xy = – 4, f yy = 12y2,
∴ D(x, y) = f xx f yy - f xy2 = 144 x2y2 – 16
Step3)
i) (0, 0); D(0, 0) = –16 < 0, ∴ (x, y, f (0,0)) = (0, 0, 1) ; a saddle pt.
ii) (1, 1); D(1, 1) = 128 > 0, f xx = 12 > 0
∴ f (1, 1) = –1 ; a local min.
iii) (-1, -1); D(-1, -1) = 128 > 0, f xx = 12 > 0
∴ f (-1, -1) = –1 ; a local min. 22
Example 3
f (x, y) = x 4 + y 4 – 4xy + 1.
Sol)
Step1) f x = 4x3 – 4y = 0, f y = 4y3 – 4x = 0,
∴ critical pt. (x, y) = (0, 0), (1, 1), (-1, -1).
Step2) f xx = 12x2, f xy = – 4, f yy = 12y2,
∴ D(x, y) = f xx f yy - f xy2 = 144 x2y2 – 16
Step3)
i) (0, 0); D(0, 0) = –16 < 0, ∴ (x, y, f (0,0)) = (0, 0, 1) ; a saddle pt.
ii) (1, 1); D(1, 1) = 128 > 0, f xx = 12 > 0
∴ f (1, 1) = –1 ; a local min.
iii) (-1, -1); D(-1, -1) = 128 > 0, f xx = 12 > 0
∴ f (-1, -1) = –1 ; a local min. 23

Absolute Maximum and Minimum Values
For a function f of one variable, the Extreme Value
Theorem says that if f is continuous on a closed interval
[a, b], then f has an absolute minimum value and an
absolute maximum value.
29
Absolute Maximum and Minimum Values
For a function f of one variable, the Extreme Value
Theorem says that if f is continuous on a closed interval
[a, b], then f has an absolute minimum value and an
absolute maximum value.
D = {(x, y)| x2 + y2 1}
32
Absolute Maximum and Minimum Values
To find the extreme values guaranteed by Theorem 8, we
note that, by Theorem 2, if f has an extreme value at
(x1, y1), then (x1, y1) is either a critical point of f or a
boundary point of D.
33
Example 7
Find the absolute maximum and minimum values of the
function f (x, y) = x2 – 2xy + 2y on the rectangle
D = {(x, y)|0 x 3, 0 y 2}.
Solution:
Since f is a polynomial, it is continuous on the closed,
bounded rectangle D, so Theorem 8 tells us there is both
an absolute maximum and an absolute minimum.
34
Example 7 – Solution cont’d
So the only critical point is (1, 1), and the value of f there is
f (1, 1) = 1.
