CAPSULE RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Title of Research Proposal *The daily use of Youtube and the attention span of children under
aged 16.

I. Research Questions/Statement of the Problem

What effect does the daily use of Youtube have on the attention span of children aged under
16?

A. Main Research Problem/s

-The study seeks to find out the proper attention span of the children aged under 16 and
the suitability of the daily use of Youtube.

B. Sub-Problem/s

1. Does Youtube affect kids attention span?

2. What is the attention span of a 16 year old?
3. What causes a child to have a short attention span?
4. What are the negative effects of using Youtube?

II. Scientific/Theoretical Background of the Study

Kids are spending more time than ever on screens. One of the unintended consequences
has been a decrease in attention span at an even younger age. Unfortunately, these rapid
changes in attention and increased screen time affect our brains and have been linked to
memory loss, depression, anxiety, and stress. Somehow, there will have an attention span
every age. Exposure to inappropriate content children and teenagers have innocent mind
since they haven’t reached their maturity level. Getting exposed to things that are not
appropriate to their age can diminish their way of thinking very early. There is no
supervision of content on Youtube channels.

Some personal-information videos, such as those depicting uploaders’ self-harm, may have
a negative impact on viewers. Such videos may encourage, normalize or sensationalize self-
injury, may trigger viewers to self-injury, and may reinforce harmful behavior through
regular viewing. There can be many causes for a child’s having short attention span from a
simple reason like a sibling distracting the other or the child being hungry at the moment to
more serious ones like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Social Media. When used properly, social media can be a valuable addition to a

department’s communication strategy. Social media is an internet-based form of
communication. Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share
information and create web content. There are many forms of social media, including blogs,
micro-blogs, wikis, social networking sites, photo-sharing sites, instant messaging, video-
sharing sites, podcasts, widgets, virtual worlds, and more.

III. Knowledge Gap to be Filled

No studies have been conducted yet in our Barangay that deals with the children regarding
the suitability of daily use of Youtube and the proper attention span aged under 16.
IV. Materials and Methods
A. Research Design

This discussion is not about traditional vs. new research methods-the idea that
traditional qualitative and quantitative research designs are stale and inappropriate in
this modern, overtly-social culture-or even about qualitative vs. quantitative. It is simply
about basic research principles that never become outmoded. The enthusiasm towards
the potential of social networking sites in the design of primary research snubs certain
fundamental design considerations, not the least of which is transparency.
Transparency is only achieved to the degree to which the researcher can account for the
variability impacting results and state with some confidence the attitudes and behavior
among research participants based on a knowledge of their framework within the
sphere of interest. This principal(transparency) alone is enough to discourage any
serious thoughts of Facebook or Twitter as viable primary research design tools.

B. Respondents and Sampling

The respondents are the children aged under 16 of Barangay Calumpang specifically in
my Purok, Purok Lapu-Lapu, 88 percent of the overall respondents are involved.
Barangay Calumpang is one of the Municipality of Balud in the Province of Masbate,
Philippines. According to 2020 census, it has a total population of 1,786 people, with 32
hectares land.

C. Data Gathering Instrument/s

The main instrument to be used in gathering the data needed for the study, is in table 1
consisted the Average Attention Span.

Age Attention Span

3 years old 6-8 minutes
4 years old 8-12 minutes
5-6 years old 12-18 minutes
7-8 years old 16-24 minutes
9-10 years old 20-30 minutes
11-12 years old 25-35 minutes
13-15 years old 30-40 minutes
16 years old 32-48 minutes
