Introduction and Purpose of the Test
This test is aimed and required to see if our construction material, now aggregate,
has the quality to meet our demands and fits the allowable ranges. There is a need
for doing these tests because without these tests one cannot seek decisions with his
or her naked eye and cannot define any distinction between any types of aggregate.

Tests Carried Out in the Scope

A list of tests and the apparatus used during the analysis of the coarse aggregate is
mentioned below:
1. Moisture content
This procedure requires that a known amount of aggregate be obtained, the
aggregate is heated to remove the moisture present in it, and the percentage of
moisture is determined.
Apparatus and materials used during the test are:
a. Balance
b. Metal container
c. Scoop
d. Oven
e. Riffle box
2. Sieve Analysis
The sieve test analysis determines the gradation (the distribution of
aggregate particles, by size, within a given sample) in order to
determine compliance with design, production control requirements,
and verification specifications.
Apparatus and materials used during the test are:
a. Set of sieves
b. Lids and receivers
c. Drying oven
d. Metal container
e. Scoop, sieve brash
f. Mechanical sieve shaker
g. Pan
3. Specific Gravity and Water Absorption of Aggregate
The specific gravity of an aggregate is considered to be a measure of the strength
or quality of the material. Water absorption gives an idea of holding capacity and
the strength of aggregate.

Apparatus and materials used during the test are:

a. Balance
b. Oven
c. Container
d. Vessel (wire basket) of not more than 6.3mm
e. Clothes
4. Dry-rodded Unit Weight of Course Aggregate
The unit weight (or dry-rodded unit weight) is a measure of the weight of a specific
volume of graded aggregates and is used for monitoring aggregate consistency and
in the mix proportioning process.

Apparatus and materials used during the test are:

a. Balance
b. Straight steel ( tamping rod)
c. Water tight metal bucket
d. oven
5. Aggregate Impact Value
The Aggregates Impact Value (AIV) Apparatus is used to determine the aggregate
impact value which provides a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to
sudden shock or impact. The counter fitted to the machine automatically records
the number of blows delivered to the sample.

Apparatus and materials used during the test are:

a. Steel cup shape of a cylinder
b. 13.5 to 14 kg hammer
c. Sieves 12.5mm, 10mm, and 2.36mm
d. Tamping rod
e. Balance
f. Oven
Laboratory Test Results
Moisture content 0.13%
Nominal maximum size ( sieve) 9mm
Specific gravity 2.13
Water absorption 2.92%
Dry-rodded unit weight 1.61
Aggregate impact value 14.12% passed
