Skill Building – Attitude Formation

What we are going to do here is to examine samples of ATTITUDE you can personally relate. We will do
this by defining these attitudes and tracing how these develop in us by breaking down into their basic
components. Afterwards we try to rationalize how in any manner we came to harbor these attitudes
and became part of us.

This is what you are going to do: (20 points)

1. List down 2 attitudes you have about anything you can think of.
 My attitude toward frogs.
 My attitude toward dogs.
2. Break down each attitude into its component (ABC’s of Attitude)
a. What do you feel about the attitude you have?
- My brother used to make fun of me about frogs when we were kids, and then one day he just
threw a frog at me to scare me. The sticky frog skin that I felt when it touched my skin has stuck
with me ever since, making me frightened whenever I see a frog.
b. What actions (behavior) I make because of that attitude?
- Whenever I see a frog on the road or anywhere else, I immediately flee or go to a location where
it is blocked from my view. I don't care if people around me make fun of me for being terrified of
frogs; the truth is that I find frog faces disgusting.
c. What are my thoughts (cognition) about the attitude?
- Frogs may be unsightly outside, but they are nonetheless significant environmental indicators, I
come to the conclusion. Maybe one day I'll come to appreciate frogs in the same way that I do
other amphibians.

a. What do you feel about the attitude you have?

- I first developed a liking for dogs when I was a little child. My other cousin was frightened of
puppies and dogs, so my aunt allowed me to hold the puppy she was holding at the time.

b. What actions (behavior) I make because of that attitude?

- Whenever our family gets together, I bring the dog specifically to frighten my cousins, who seem
to be dog-phobic. In my youth, it was enjoyable since I was clueless about the effects of my
actions.
c. What are my thoughts (cognition) about the attitude?
- Despite learning that a dog's bite or scratch may kill a human because of their rabies, I still
consider the joy I had with them as a child to be my fondest memory and an important
contributing part in my current affection for and love for dogs.
