CHAPTER- 8
In order to ensure the success of online classes
please follow the following etiquettes:
● Keep yourselves on mute so there is no disturbance.
● Turn on your cameras.
● In between if you leave the class you will be marked as
absent.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

DAY-1
TOPIC FOR
TODAY:
LOCOMOTION IN
ANIMALS
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Various kinds of movements in animals

Different animals possess various kinds of movements
like:
● Swimming
● Running
● Jumping
● Flying
● Gliding
● Crawling
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Why movements in
animals is important?
movement is important:
★ For reproduction.
★ To protect themselves
★ from their predators
★ To search food and shelter
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Different animals
move in different
ways:
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Earthworm:
● An earthworm is an
invertebrate.(do not have
bones)
● It has long tube like body.
● the body is made up of many
rings
● muscles help them to extend
and shorten the body
● it has liquid skeleton
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Earthworm:
1. During movement, the
earthworm first extends the
front part of the body keeping
the rear portion fixed to the
ground. Front Part
(Mouth)
Rear End
(Anus)
2. then it fixes the front end and
releases the rear end
3. It then shortens the body and
put the rear end forward.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Earthworm:
4. This makes it move
forward by small
distance.
5. Repeating such
muscle expansion and
contraction the
earthworm can moves
through soil.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Earthworm:
6. The body of the earthworm
secretes a slimy substance to
help the movement by
reducing friction.
7. It has a large number of
hair like projections called
bristles projecting out.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Earthworm:

8. Bristles are
connected
with the
muscles and
help to get a
good grip on
the ground

CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS
Earthworm:
Earthworms are known as farmers’ best
friends because:
● they improve the quality of the soil
like water holding capacity, moisture,
and nutrient content by burrowing
into the soil.
● the soil becomes loose and porous.
● Also, the worm castings improve the
distribution of organic matter in the
soil.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snails:
● Snails have liquid
skeleton.
● It is very slow moving
animal.
● Snails are
soft,unsegmented and
aquatic animals.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snails:
● The body is divided
into head, ventral
muscular foot and
dorsal visceral mass
● The body is covered
with calcareous shell
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snails:
● Muscular foot produces
slimy mucus. It is like the
grease and makes
movement easier by
reducing friction.
● Muscular foot also
produces wave like
movement that make the
snail move forward.

CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Cockroach:
● Cockroach is an insect
and is a terrestrial animal
a common household
pest.
● Cockroaches possess
various type of
locomotion they can walk,
climb, fly.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Cockroach:
● The body is divided
into three parts—
1. Head,
2. Thorax,
3. Abdomen.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Cockroach:
● It has three pairs of
legs and two pairs of
wings which help in
movement.
● The body is covered
with the outer hard
exoskeleton.

DAY-2 CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● Birds are egg laying
animal with feathers,
wings and beak.
● Birds can fly, run, walk,
perch, swim.
● Birds possess various
kinds of movements.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● But not all the birds
can fly.
For example:
● Penguin, Kiwi and
Ostrich cannot fly
these are called
flightless birds.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● Fore limbs of birds
were modified into
wings due to which
they can fly.
● Hind limbs are legs
due to which they
can jump, walk or
perch and swim .
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● Birds have
powerful chest
muscles which
help them in
flapping their
wings during
flight
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● The skeleton of
birds is hollow to
reduce weight
● Birds have
streamlined body
which reduces the
friction
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● The wings move
down and
forward lifting
the body in the
air this
movement is
termed
downstroke
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● When the wings
are lifted
upwards in
preparation for
another
downstroke the
movement is
termed upstroke
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Birds:
● small birds jump and take
off
● On landing the wings are
held back and the body is
tilted so that it acts as a
break.

CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Fish:
● Fish are vertebrates.
● The endoskeleton is made
of cartilage or bone
● Body is covered with the
scales.
● They have gills for
breathing
● Fins for swimming
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Fish:
● The Skeleton of the fish
is covered with strong
muscles.
● During swimming
muscles make the front
part of the body curve
to one side and the tail
part swings towards the
opposite side.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Fish:
● The fish forms a
curve
● Then quickly the
body and tail curve
to the other side this
makes a jerk and
pushes the body
forward
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Fish:
● A series of such jerks make a
fish swim ahead this is helped
by the fins of the tail.
● To help Movement in water,
fishes have a streamlined
shape which reduces the
water resistance and enables
the fish to glide along in the
water
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snakes:
● Snakes have a long
backbone
● They have many thin
muscles, which are
connected to each other
even though they are far
from one another
● Muscles also interconnect
the backbone ribs and skin.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snakes:
● The body of a snake
curves into many
loops.
● Each loop of the snake
gives it a forward push
by pressing against the
ground.
CHAPTER-8: BODY MOVEMENTS

Snakes:
● Since, its long body
makes many loops
and each loop gives it
this push
● The snake move
forward very fast but
not in a straight line
