A review on elimination of arbitrary
constant

Another thing to learn is how to eliminate an arbitrary constant or how to find

the differential equation by Elimination of Arbitrary Constant.
EXAMPLE: Eliminate the arbitrary constants c from the equation 𝒙𝟐 𝒚 = 𝟏 + 𝒄𝒙.

3
Separation of Variables
▪ In this module we study several elementary methods for solving first ODE. We
begin by studying an equation in the form

𝑀𝑑𝑥 + 𝑁𝑑𝑦 = 0
▪ where M and N may be functions of both x and y. Some equations of this type
are so simple that they can be put in the form

𝐴 𝑥 𝑑𝑥 + 𝐵 𝑦 𝑑𝑦 = 0 (1)
▪ that is, the variables can be separated, Then a solution can be written at once.
For it is only a matter of finding a function F whose total differential is the left
member of (1). Then F = c, where c is an arbitrary constant, is the desired result.

4
Separation of Variables
𝑑𝑦 2𝑦
▪ Example: Solve the equation
𝑑𝑥
= 𝑥

5
Separation of Variables
▪ Example: Solve the equation 2𝑥 𝑦 − 1 𝑑𝑥 − 𝑦𝑑𝑦 = 0 when 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 2.
