Week 3
Department of Education
REGION XIII – CARAGA
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF AGUSAN DEL SUR
AGUSAN DEL SUR NATIONAL SCIENCE HIGH SCHOOL
Government Center, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur
(1) Review:
Begin the lesson by reviewing the concept of sequences and their
types: arithmetic, geometric, and others.
Review the definition of an arithmetic sequence and the terms used,
such as the first term, common difference, and general term, to
connect them to the new lesson to be discussed.
(2) Motivation:
Use real-life examples: Start the lesson by presenting real-life
scenarios where arithmetic series are used, such as calculating the
total distance traveled by a car during a road trip or determining the
total cost of a series of purchases.
Visual aids: Show visual representations of arithmetic series, such as
number patterns or graphs, to engage students and pique their
curiosity.
(3) Activity 1 (Determining the General Term):
Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts with arithmetic series examples
Instructions:
1. Begin by reviewing the concept of arithmetic series and its terms.
2. Demonstrate how to determine the general term of an arithmetic series
using a given sequence of numbers.
3. Provide examples for the students to practice determining the general
term their own.
4. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and assign them additional
problems to solve.
5. Monitor their progress and provide assistance as needed.
Rubrics:
- Correctness of general term determination: 5 points
- Explanation of the steps taken: 3 points
- Neatness and organization: 2 points.
Assessment questions:
1. What is the general term of the arithmetic series: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19...?
2. Find the general term of the arithmetic series: 2, 6, 10, 14, 18...
4. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and assign them additional
problems to solve.
5. Monitor their progress and provide assistance as needed.
Rubrics:
- Correctness of nth partial sum calculation: 5 points
- Explanation of the steps taken: 3 points
- Neatness and organization: 2 points
Assessment questions:
1. Calculate the 6th partial sum of the arithmetic series: 3 + 7 + 11 + 15 + ...
+ 31.
2. Find the 4th partial sum of the arithmetic series: 5 + 9 + 13 + 17 + ... +
25.
(4) Analysis:
After completing each activity, discuss the solutions as a class and
address any misconceptions or difficulties encountered by the
students. Emphasize the importance of understanding the concepts of
arithmetic series and their applications in real-life situations.
(5) Abstraction:
Summarize the key concepts learned in this lesson, including
determining the general term, evaluating the summation, and
calculating the nth partial sum of an arithmetic series. Encourage
students to reflect on the relevance and usefulness of these concepts
in various fields of study.
(6) Application:
Provide the students with a real-life problem that involves arithmetic
series, such as calculating the total savings of a person who deposits
a fixed amount of money each month with a fixed interest rate over a
period of time. Ask them to apply the concepts learned in the lesson to
solve the problem and explain their reasoning.
(7) Assessment:
Teachers can assess the learning of the students through the following
methods:
Written tests or quizzes focusing on determining the general term,
evaluating the summation, and calculating the nth partial sum.
Class discussions and participation in solving arithmetic series
problems.
(8) Assignment:
Assign the students with exercises or problems that reinforce the
concepts learned in the lesson. Provide a variety of problems that
require determining the general term, evaluating the summation, and
calculating the nth partial sum. Encourage students to show their
work and explain their solutions clearly.
