1. Influx of Liberal Ideas: The influx of liberal ideas, often brought in by Filipinos who studied in Europe,
exposed Filipinos to democratic and nationalist ideals. It inspired them to seek greater political
participation, independence, and self-determination, contributing to the rise of Filipino nationalism.

2. Spanish Revolution of 1868: The Spanish Revolution of 1868, known as the "Glorious Revolution" in
Spain, led to political reforms and a more liberal Spanish government. This change encouraged Filipinos
to hope for similar reforms and greater autonomy within the Spanish colonial system, fueling nationalist
sentiments.

3. Opening of the Suez Canal: The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 facilitated communication and
trade between the Philippines and Spain, as well as with other nations. This increased connectivity
exposed Filipinos to global ideas and trends, including those related to nationalism and self-
determination.

4. Secularization Movement: The secularization movement aimed to transfer control of Philippine

parishes from Spanish friars to local secular priests. This movement sparked discussions about Filipino
religious and social rights, contributing to a sense of Filipino identity and nationalism.

5. Martyrdom of GOMBURZA: The execution of Filipino priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto
Zamora (collectively known as GOMBURZA) in 1872 for their alleged involvement in the Cavite Mutiny
led to outrage and a sense of injustice among Filipinos. Their martyrdom became a symbol of resistance
against Spanish oppression and fueled nationalist sentiments and aspirations for reform and
independence.
