Fire Rampant at the Historic Manila Central Post Office

May 22, 2023; Fire spreads earlier today 9:29 AM at Manila Central Post Office mentioned by
the Bureau of Fire and Protection when it reached the highest fire alarm that it has affected major parts
of the area, it is estimated that the cost of damage is P300 million.

“Confined space siya so talagang mainit siya kaya yung mabilis yung pag dry up ng materials
kahit mag bomba tayo ng tubig dahil sa init niya nag e-evaporate yung tubig. Sa water talaga kailangan
natin continuous supply ng water”, Manila Fire District Senior Superintendent Christine Cula said. He
also said that the fire started at the General Service Office located in the building’s basement.

There were seven reported injuries and most of them were firefighters who experienced
difficulty from breathing and suffered abrasions. The light materials inside the building, such as letters
and parcels, contributed to the intensity of the fire stated by the BFP-NCR Director Nahum B. Tarroza.
They will investigate if there were lapses on the part of the postal office

“It’s saddening. We have been housed here for the last how many years, how many decades
already. I’ve been here for the last 23 years. It’s something we hope we can restore” Carlos said. He said
that the letters and parcels bound for Manila and outside it, were “totally burned.” Some court letters
and national ID’s were also affected.
