PURE SUBTANCE : IS A TYPE OF MATTER THAT CONTAINS ONLY ONE KIND OF PARTICLES.

it has fixed properties and compositions.

cannot be broken down by physical means.

TYPES OF SUBTANCE OR PURE SUBTANCE.

1.ELEMENT
IS THE SIMPLEST TYPE OF A SUBSTANCE.
IT CONSISTS OF ONLY ONE KIND OF ITEM.

2.compound
IS THE COMBINATION OF 2 OR MORE ELEMENTS.
WHEN THE ELEMTS ARE COMBIED IT PRODUCES DIFFERENT SETS OF
PROPERTIES.

SOLUTION IS COMPOSED OF THE SOLUTE OF THE SOLVENT.

SOLUTE IS THE ONE THAT IS DISSOLVED.

solute is

solvent is the subtance that dissolves the solute.

heterogenous mixes dont have a uniform in comopsition the components

in heterogeneous mixture are large ENOUGH to be seen!
Most heterogeneous mixture have components that can be seperated manually.

EXAMPLES OF HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURES: Salad, Fruit salad , Paella, Milk and cereals ,
Chicken peas , Ice cubes in a drink and smog!

NOTE: there are 2 types of heterogeneous mixtures:

SUSPENSION : IS A MIXTURE OF INSOLUBLE SOLIDS THAT SETTLE DOWN IN LIQUID AFTER
BEING LEFT UNDISTURBED

COLLOID : is a SPECIAL KIND OF MIXTURE THAT CONTAINS PARTICLES THAT CANNOT BE SEEN
BY THE NAKED EYE. THE TINY PARTICLES DO NOT SETTLE DOWN.
- medium-sized particles
-tyndall effect - particles scatter light (looks cloudy) - particles never settle
- EXAMPLE : MILK
types OF COLLOIDS:
1. EMULSION one of the famous types of colloids. it is formed when you combine 2
liquids that are immiscible
( liquids that do not mix)

2. AEROSOLS
are mixtures of very small liquid /or solid particles dispersed in gas
,such as air.

2 TYPES OF AEROSOLS:
NATURAL AEROSOLS - THESE ARE aerosols that make it into our atmosphere directly
from natural sources. such as SMOKE . SOOT AND DESERT DUST.

MAN-MADE AEROSOLS - CAN BE FOUND IN THE AIR OF CITIES AND INDUSTRIAL AREAS.

3. FOAMS
IS A MATERIAL FORMED WHEN AIR IN A LIQUID IS TRAP OR SOLID

4. SOL
IS MADE UP OF MINUTE SOLID PARTICLES DISPERSED IN A LIQUID MEDIUM.
5.GEL
IS A SEMISOLID , JELLYLIKE TYPE OF COLLOID FORMED WHEN LIQUID PARTICLES
ARE DISPERSED IN A SOLID MEDIUM.
