REPORT #3 (Karman Vortex Shedding)

Karman Vortex Shedding

1a)

1. Make a 2D rectangle and circle as shown in Fig. 1a. The dimension of length is [mm].
2. Define the material properties for the fluids. (Incompressible fluid is recommended)
Fluid A: density = 1 kg/m3, dynamic viscosity = 0.001 kg/m-s
Fluid B: density = 1000 kg/m3, dynamic viscosity = 0.001 kg/m-s
3. Guess inlet velocity inputs which are based on Re to distinguish Karman Vortex Shedding types.
4. Explain the results of the simulation based on three or four typical Re.
5. Set the value of Re for fulid A and B as same quantity (Do not change the physical properties
of fluids). Compare the simulation results of fluid A and B.

1b)

Solve 3D Karman Vortex Shedding with a rectangular box and cylinder for the model shown in
Fig. 1b) (using interior materials: fluid A and fluid B). The thickness of the 3D box is 10d.
Describe the results of 3D Karman Vortex Shedding problem.

1c)

Compare the results of 2D and 3D. If the results are different, describe the differences and
explain why the differences occur.

1d) (Optional)

Compare the results of original and half domain which is used for symmetry tool in ANSYS,
describe the difference of calculation time (CPU hour) and explain why the difference occur.
