February 2009 Saudi Railway (SAR) Project

Specifications

2.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

In general, all feeders will be installed in conduits laid on cable trays, in trenches or
in vertical shafts.

Life safety and critical feeders shall be of the fire rated type capable of sustaining
fire for two hours minimum.

Cable penetrations through fire separation zones shall be capped off with fire
stopping material.

Cable sizes shall be given in metric units.

Cables shall have copper conductors stranded for section 4mm2 and above, based on
IEC 60228 Class 2. Signal and control cables are to have solid conductors. Flexible
cords are to have finely stranded conductors. Conductors of single core cables
25mm2 and above are to be compacted. Multi-core cables 35mm2 and above shall be
of the sectoral shape.

Cables buried directly in the ground shall be armored, protected by concrete tiles and
warning tapes. When crossing under roads, pipe banks or other services, directly
buried cables are to be laid in heavy-duty PVC duct banks. In no case are cables to
be directly buried in concrete, in masonry or in floor finish.

Cables shall be color coded or otherwise identified in accordance with the

regulations as applicable to the voltage system. Building wiring insulation shall be as
such:

Red, Yellow, Blue for the phases (1, 2, 3)

Black for the neutral
Green / Yellow for the earth.
Phase conductors for which outer jacket is not color-coded are to have
engraved alphanumeric mark (L1, L2, L3) or color-coded heat-shrinkable
sleeves.

Low voltage main feeders and sub-feeders (down to 70mm.sq. section) extending
from the transformers to the automatic transfer switches, the main distribution
boards and the distribution panels on the floors, shall be copper, XLPE insulated,
and PVC sheathed multicore cables.

Cables of cross section equal and smaller than 6mm.sq shall have PVC insulation.

Cables of cross section equal or greater than 10mm.sq shall have XLPE insulation.

Specifications

Characteristics of cables shall be:

- Conductor

Plain, annealed electrolytic copper or aluminium conductors, solid circular

stranded, or sectoral stranded, conforming to the applicable requirements of
IEC 60228.

- Insulation

PVC based thermoplastic or XLPE thermosetting material, conforming to the

applicable requirements of IEC 60502-1.

- Assembly

Insulated conductors are laid up, filled where necessary with non-hygroscopic
material and covered with an additional layer of extruded thermoplastic
material or non-hygroscopic binding tape.

- Sheath

PVC based thermoplastic material, conforming to the applicable requirements

of IEC 60502-1.

- Tests

Conforming to the applicable requirements of IEC 60502-1 either on raw

materials or on finished products.

Single Core Wires (NYA) (CU/PVC in Conduit)

This Specification covers single core, PVC insulated wires, intended for internal wiring in
dry locations, concealed in conduits.

Conductors shall be of high conductivity annealed plain copper with concentric stranding
for stranded conductors, to IEC 228, or approved equal.

Minimum conductor size used shall not be less than 2.5 mm2.

All wires for lighting and power systems pulled inside conduits shall be single core,
insulated with PVC compound, of grade not less than 450/750 volts, to IEC 227..

Multicore Cables (Low Tensions)

This specification covers two, three or four core cables, PVC or XLPE insulated as shown
on drawings and PVC sheathed, rated at 0.6/kV unarmored type to international
Electrotechnical Commission Publication IEC 502.

Conductor shall be plain, annealed electrolytic copper, circular or sectoral stranded,

conforming to the applicable requirements of IEC 228.
