(a) Define the meaning of rubber materials? Based on the definition, describe one important
characteristics that differentiate between rubber, plastic and metals. (4 marks)

(b) Describe ‘tackiness’ of rubber and relate your explanation with rubber unique
characteristics. (6 marks)

(c) Low glass transition temperature and large free volume are unique characteristics of
rubber materials. Discuss the importance of this characteristics on the mechanical
properties of a rubber in general.
(4 marks)

(d) Give definition of green strength and give one examples of rubber with good green
strength. Briefly explain the importance of this property in rubber processing. (6
marks)
Question 2

CO1 20 marks

(a) Commercial rubbers can be divided into various groups according to their criterion and
application. With the aid of molecular structure, compare the properties of two rubbers,
one which is polar and contains a high level of unsaturation and the other non-polar and
almost saturated. (8 marks)

(b) Suggest a rubber material that can be used for making ‘car tire tread’ which suitable to be
used in tropical countries. The material must provide good abrasion resistance and wet
skid resistance. Discuss a two suitable rubber materials and justify the best material that
you choose. (12 marks)

Natural rubber (NR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) are two rubbers that commonly
used for car tyre tread. Discuss the properties of both rubbers and suggest the best rubber
for better application of tyre in tropical countries. Provide good justification for your
chosen selection.
