VE 315 - RESEARCH IN VALUES EDUCATION 1

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this chapter, the students shall be able to:

1. Identify and Analyze the 5 main parts of research.

2. List the preliminaries found in chapter 1 and attachments after the chapter 5 of
the research.

Instructions:

1. The student shall read critically and understand comprehensively the following
topics for this UNIT 3.

2. The soft copies of Preliminary Activity 3, Self-Assessment Activity 3 and End of

Learning Material Evaluation 3 shall be submitted to the Teaching Faculty via FB
messenger or Gmail.

3. Making their own notes, inquiring for clarification or further exposition of the
enumerated topics from the course teacher and browsing the internet and other
instructional media are highly commendable.

VE 315 - RESEARCH IN VALUES EDUCATION 1

Lesson 1: 5 MAIN PARTS/CHAPTERS

1. The Problem and Its Setting

- A background of the research interest in the problem
- A description of the population or community involved
- A clear definition of the topic or question, and
- Reasons why the topic is important

2. Review of Related Literature and Studies

- It enables the researcher to gain an understanding of what is known about the
topic.
- This locates ideas on research designs, data collection, instruments, and
methods for data analysis.

3. Research Design/Methodology
- The methodology section of a research design describes the methods that will
be used to carry out the project.

4. Data Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation

- Interpretation has two major aspects namely establishing continuity in the
research through linking the results of a given study with those of another and
the establishment of some relationship with the collected data.
o Interpretation can be defined as the device through which the factors,
which seem to explain what has been observed by the researcher in the
course of the study, can be better understood.
o Interpretation provides a theoretical conception which can serve as a
guide for the further research work.
- Interpretation of the data has become a very important and essential process,
mainly because of some of the following factors:
o Enables the researcher to have an in – depth knowledge about the
abstract principle behind his own findings.
o The researcher is able to understand his findings and the reasons behind
their existence.
o More understanding and knowledge can be obtained with the help of the
further research.
o Provides a very good guidance in the studies relating to the research
work.
- Data analysis is the process of bringing order, structure and meaning to the
mass of collected data.

5. Summary, Conclusions and Recommendation

- The interpretations given by the researcher of the significance of the findings of
a research project for the client's business, along with recommendations for
action. These recommendations will be based on the research and on any other
relevant information available to the researcher, including their own past
experience in a market or in business.

- Conclusions and recommendations usually form an important part of a project

debrief and of any report or documentation, and are a key part of the value
offered to clients by professional market research.

Lesson 2: PRELIMINARIES BEFORE CHAPTER 1

1. Title Page
- The title page for a thesis contains the full title, the author's name and academic
credentials, the degree-granting faculty and department name, the name of the
university and date of graduation, and the universal copyright symbol.
- The thesis title page is usually page i, but is not numbered; the abstract (page ii)
is the first numbered page.

2. Acknowledgment
- A page of acknowledgements is usually included at the beginning of a Final Year
Project, immediately after the Table of Contents.

- Acknowledgements enable you to thank all those who have helped in carrying
out the research. Careful thought needs to be given concerning those whose
help should be acknowledged and in what order. The general advice is to
express your appreciation in a concise manner and to avoid strong emotive
language.

3. Dedication
- This part is, basically, a source to offer warmest gratefulness of the writer
towards any other person for whom he wish to pay honor.
- Dedication page always comes on the front of the book or thesis

4. Abstract
- An abstract is a short summary of the published or unpublished research paper,
usually about a paragraph (c. 6-7 sentences, 150-250 words) long.
- A well-written abstract serves multiple purposes:
o an abstract lets readers get the gist or essence of your paper or article
quickly, in order to decide whether to read the full paper;
o an abstract prepares readers to follow the detailed information, analyses,
and arguments in your full paper;
o and, later, an abstract helps readers remember key points from your
paper.

5. Table of Contents
- The Table of Contents (TOC) is an organized listing of the chapters and major
sections of the document.
o Readers will immediately be able to see how the manuscript is organized
and then skip down to sections that are most relevant to them.
o A clear, concise, and well formatted TOC is the first indicator of a good
research paper.

6. List of Tables/Figures
- A List of Tables is a reference tool that allows the readers to quickly and easily
navigate to data in the thesis or dissertation.
o Construction of the list is similar to creating a Table of Contents.

- The List of Figures allows readers to quickly and easily navigate to those pages
containing charts and images that are of interest to them.

Lesson 3: ENTRIES AFTER CHAPTER 5

1. References
- A references page is the last page of an essay or research paper that's been
written in APA style.
o It lists all the sources used in the research project, so readers can easily
find what were cited.

2. Appendices
- An appendix contains supplementary material that is not an essential part of the
text itself but which may be helpful in providing a more comprehensive
understanding of the research problem or it is information that is too
cumbersome to be included in the body of the paper.

- It is appropriate to include appendices for the following reasons:

o Including this material in the body of the paper that would render it poorly
structured or interrupt the narrative flow;
o Information is too lengthy and detailed to be easily summarized in the
body of the paper;
o Inclusion of helpful, supporting, or useful material would otherwise
distract the reader from the main content of the paper;
o Provides relevant information or data that is more easily understood or
analyzed in a self-contained section of the paper;
o Can be used when there are constraints placed on the length of your
paper; and,
o Provides a place to further demonstrate your understanding of the
research problem by giving additional details about a new or innovative
method, technical details, or design protocols.

3. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

- A CV (short for the Latin phrase curriculum vitae, which means “course of life”) is
a detailed document highlighting your professional and academic history.
- CVs typically include information like work experience, achievements and
awards, scholarships or grants you’ve earned, coursework, research projects
and publications of your work.

Summary/Key Points:

Problem and its setting, Review of Related Literature and Studies, Research
Design and Methodology, Data Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation and Summary,
Conclusion and Recommendations are the basic contents of research paper. The
preliminary parts consist of Research Title, Acknowledgment, Dedication, Abstract, Table
of Contents and List of Tables and Figures. Entries after Chapter 5 are References,
Appendices and Curriculum Vitae.

Looking Ahead:

The next unit contains a discussion about ORGANIZING THE PRELIMINARY

PARTS OF RESEARCH PAPER – Acknowledgment, Dedication, Abstract, Table of
Contents and List of Tables/Figures.
