HILAL FOODS ROOF DRAIN

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

 When designing the roof drain system, the engineer must remember that the
roof is being utilized as a temporary reservoir to retain some water. Flashing and
waterproofing should be high enough to prevent any leakage. The engineer must
also provide adequate strength for structural safety.
 In addition the following considerations should be observed:
 On all roofs, use minimum of two drains, if possible.
 On larger roofs, use a greater number of drains as dictated by design layout.
 Limit roof area to 25,000 sq. ft. per weir opening.
 Recommended maximum distance from roof edge to drain is 50 ft. (flat roofs).
 Recommended maximum distance from end of valley to drain is 50 ft. (sloped
roofs).
 Recommended maximum distance between drains is 200 ft.
 Provide adequate flashing at parapets, openings, walls, joints, etc.
 Limit parapet walls or provide overflow scuppers. These should be located at the
anticipated maximum water depth (build-up).

Steps for calculation:

 Area of roof
 Hourly amount of rainfall
 Leader Pipe size
 Area covered per leader size
 Inches of rain and desired flow rate per leader
 Roof drain size and free area
 Allowable gpm through free area @ different height of inches of water
 Number and model of roof drains selected and over designed criteria
 Standards and codes followed

Area of roof = 230 x 50 = 11500 m²

Volume of water flow at 6” hourly rainfall = 11500 x 0.150 = 1725 m³/hr => 7594 gpm

We consider a flow rate of 8000 gpm to minimize the under design rate.
We are taking leader size as 6” and amount of rainfall as 6 in/hr so maximum allowable
horizontal projected roof area is 6800 ft²

Roof area in ft² = 123784 = 125000 ft²

Minimum amount of leaders required = 125000/6800 = 18.3 = 19 roof drains

In our design we have taken 40 roof drains which equals a flow rate of 16960 gpm from
total roof.
Roof drain cover

The roof drain cover shall have a minimum of 100 in² free area upto a maximum of ·250
in² free area.

To get flowrate from free area following formula is applied

Q = 448.2x Cd x A √(2 x g x h)
Where:
 Q = flow rate in gpm
 Cd = Discharge coefficient (0.6 approx)
 A = Free Area in inches
 G = Gravitational acceleration in ft/s²
 H = Water head above floor in inches

When taking free area of 50in² (half immerged in water) and a head of 1 in above the
drain, then flow rate equals to 150 gpm.
To maximize the flow it is recommended to place roof drain on area that is at a lower
level then roof so that the head and water velocity increases to maximize the efficiency
of the drain.

Roof Drain Installation

 Create a square opening in roof (Q-deck) to receive drain assembly. Opening sizes are:
Z100 18" x 18"
 Fasten drain body to deck plate by aligning the four (4) bosses on body and four
(4) slots on plate using bolts provided.
 Put body/plate assembly onto the precut opening in the roof, aligning deck plate
attachment slots in the appropriate position.

 Fasten the assembly to the roof with self-tapping screws (provided by others).
 Attach dome to clamp collar to complete assembly
