A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

in Science VI
Grade VI-A
2:00PM-2:50PM

I.OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. Identify the different methods of separating mixtures including manual separation, magnetic
separation, filtration, decantation, evaporation, and freezing or cooling;
b. Demonstrate an understanding of how mixtures can be separated using the mentioned
methods; and
c. Express curiosity and interest in investigating and exploring new ways to separate mixtures
using different materials and techniques.

II.SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Separating Mixtures (Grade 6)

Reference: Teaching Science in the Elementary Grades (pp. 79-82) by Alexander, P. et
al.(1999)Silver Burdett & Ginn life science. Silver & Ginn Inc. USA
Materials: Pictures, Permanent Marker Pen, Manila paper, Construction paper, Plastic bullets,
Magnet, Nails, Wood debris, Water, Tea, Glass, Oil, Ice bag.
Values Integration: Patience and problem-solving are important in the process of separating
mixtures, as it requires careful observation, trial and error, and perseverance to achieve
successful results.

III.LEARNING PROCEDURE

A. Preparatory Activities

1.Prayer
2.Greetings
3.Checking of Attendance
4.Review

The teacher will ask the following questions:

a. What was our lesson yesterday?

b. What is Oxygen?
c. What is a Chemical change?
5.Motivation

The teacher will show pictures to her students about the different ways of separating mixtures
and will ask the following questions:
a. What can you observe on each picture?
b. Why does sand not stick to magnets but metals do?
c. What happens when you heat the water?

B. Developmental Activities

1.Presentation

There are different ways of separating the components of mixtures:

1.Manual separation is done to mixtures which components differ in size.

2.Magnetic separation is a process that uses magnet to separate the magnetic component from a
nonmagnetic one.
3.Filtration is a process that can separate suspended particles from the liquid.
4.Decantation is a process of separating a mixture of liquids that differ in density. The less
dense liquid usually stays on top.
5.Evaporation process is used to separate a solute that has been dissolved in water.
6.Freezing or cooling is a process of separating mixture used for mixtures composed of two
liquid components of different freezing points.

2.Application

The class will have an activity. They will be divided into six groups. Each group will be
given a task to do.
Group 1 they have to show how to do Manual separation.
Group 2 they have to show how to do Magnetic separation.
Group 3 they have to show how to do Filtration.
Group 4 they have to show how to do Decantation.
Group 5 they have to show how to do Evaporation.
Group 6 they have to show how to do Freezing or cooling.

The score of each group will be based on the given rubrics. They will only be given three (3)
minutes to do their tasks.

Rubrics:
Presentation -20 points
Cooperation -10 points
Neatness -10 points
Total -40 points
3.Generalization

The teacher will ask the following questions:

a. Did you understand our lesson for today?

b. What is the difference between Manual separation and Magnetic separation?
c. Give an example of Filtration?
d. What happens when you leave a glass of water open in the heat of the sun?
e. Which hardens faster when placed in the freezer, water or oil?

IV.EVALUATION

Multiple Choice
Directions: Read each question carefully. Choose the letter which corresponds to the correct
answer and write it on your one half sheet your paper.

a)Manual separation
b)Filtration
c)Magnetic separation
d)Decantation

2.When separating a mixture of oil and water, which method is typically used?
a)Filtration
b)Magnetic separation
c)Decantation
d)Evaporation

3.When you want to separate the mixture of oil and water and you use a freezer, which method
would be most suitable?
a)Manual separation
b)Freezing or cooling
c)Filtration
d)Magnetic separation

4.If you want to separate a mixture of sand and water, which method would be the most
effective?
a)Freezing or cooling
b)Magnetic separation
c)Decantation
d)Filtration
5.When would you use the process of decantation for separation?
a)Separating salt from water
b)Separating oil from water
c)Separating small solid particles from a liquid
d)Separating two immiscible liquids

V.ASSIGNMENT

Please refer to page 82 of your textbook and answer the activity 1. Write your correct answer on
your activity notebook. This will be passed on Monday.
