    ACTIVITY 1

    The UN’s Agenda 21 is a comprehensive plan of action to be taken globally, nationally and locally
    by organizations of the United Nations System, Governments, and Major Groups in every area in which
    human impacts on the environment. Agenda 21 sets out a plan of action to guarantee that life in the
    next millennium will change substantially for the better. It was endorsed by the world’s governments at
    the UN Conference on Environment and Development, in Rio de Janeiro, five years ago in June 1992.

    Resilience is important everywhere because all communities and ecosystems face hazards such
    as flashflood and drought – risks which are exacerbated by our changing environment. Productive
    ecosystems are necessary for the supply of ecosystem services. Ecosystems that is lack resilience are
    vulnerable to disturbances that can lead to reduction in the supply of ecosystem services.

    Learning sustainability teaches us wealth comes from the environment and people as well as the
    profit sector. Governance must find ways to deliver equitable services and wealth to those that are
    governed. Business is also by its nature a private enterprise.
