Ophthalmology is one of my waterloos in medical school simply because I did not
have the interest for it. I regret that I put less effort in learning this discipline because it obviously affected my practice on top of the reason that ophthalmology is generally difficult to address because equipment to help you diagnose patients are not accessible to all practitioners. An ophthalmoscope is going to cause you a fortune so being resourceful is key; family medicine helped me with this. Just recently I learned digital tonometry as taught by my senior residents. My rotation at CVMC Ophthalmology was something that I value so much. In such small period of time I was with the team, I learned an enormous amount of knowledge. I was able to understand some of its difficult areas because of the very approachable and willing residents. I know that I may sound like a broken record, but because of this very fruitful rotation their very inviting work-life balance, I am considering Ophthalmology as second specialty. What I appreciate in my rotation here is that, I am very thankful that CVMC has this department to help patients. I consider blindness as a very life devastating disease, and most patients afflicted with this are old patients, the same patients who feel that life is coming short for them. I can only imagine the sadness among these people, therefore, giving them the opportunity to better their life like cataract surgery can impact the quality of their life.
