The 6 D(imension) MODEL

Dimension 1 POWER DISTANCE


Power distance is about hierarchy.

Cultures with low power distance scores value flat management.


Their ideal leader is a facilitator. In a business context everyone has a say.

Cultures with high power distance scores value hierarchy.


Their ideal leader is rather autocratic. In a business context he/she has the final
say.

Dimension 2 INDIVIDUALISM vs COLLECTIVISM


The higher the score the more individualistic the country is.
Individualistic cultures = « I »
Everyone can decide, every individual works for his/her own success
Every individual can have his/her own opinion

Collectivist cultures = « We »
Every individual is part of a group.
The group protects its members, so individual need a group
The group’s rules must always be respected

Dimension 3 MASCULINITY vs FEMINITY
Masculine cultures (« be the best »)
Societies where achievement , assertiveness and individual successes
are central and essential.
Rather competitive societies

Feminine cultures (« Do your best »)


Societies where cooperation, modesty, quality of life and caring for the weak
are central and essential.
Rather people centered and caring societies

Dimension 4 UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE


Cultures with a high uncertainty avoidance score
Rules are rigid and needed
Everyone respect rules and society organisation
Degrees and skills are highly valued
Complex is clever
Levels of stress and anxiety are relatively high

Cultures with a low uncertainty avoidance score


Practice counts more than theory (degrees less valued)
Global attitude more relaxed
Simple is clever
People tend to be more innovative (as a consequence more entrepreneurs)

Dimension 5 LONG TERM ORIENTATION (a culture link with its own
past)
Societies with a low Long Term Orientation score
Maintain, keep time honored traditions and norms
Societal change seems suspicious, nearly dangerous
« Black and white » thinking is the norm
The « truth » is absolute

Societies with a high Long Term Orientation score


Have a more flexible, adaptable approach
Modern education is valued to prepare for future changes and The Future

Dimension 6 INDULGENCE vs RESTRAINT (attitude towards happiness)


Societies with a high indulgence score
Support life enjoyment and fun
Understand human natural drive to enjoy life
Tolerate some human rather excessive reactions (strikes, demonstrations…)

Societies with a low indulgence score


Are societies with strict social rules and norms
Life enjoyment and fun are not sopported and are exceptional
