Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in an internship with the State Department. As a former
research assistant with both the American Task Force on Lebanon and the Middle East Institute, I believe
I possess the professional and knowledge skills required for this position.

I am currently a double major in Political Science, as well as International and Global Studies at
Gettysburg College, as well as a double minor in French and Middle East Islamic Studies. Through my
coursework, I have gained a deep understanding of the political, economic, and social dynamics that
shape the region. In addition, I have taken courses on worldwide development, the Guantanamo Bay
Detention Center, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while also getting the chance to visit Israel,
Palestine, and Jordan to learn about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict more in-depth. This background has
equipped me with the skills necessary to analyze complex issues and develop informed opinions on
current events around the world.

As an intern with the State Department, I am excited to have the opportunity to apply my academic
knowledge to real-world issues. I am particularly interested in the Department’s work on U.S. foreign
policy in the Middle East and the challenges posed by terrorism, sectarianism, and authoritarianism. I am
confident that my strong research and analytical skills, as well as my ability to work collaboratively with
others, will enable me to make a valuable contribution to the Department’s mission.

In addition to my academic coursework, I have gained practical experience through internships with the
American Task Force on Lebanon and the Middle East Institute. In these positions, I was responsible for
conducting research, drafting policy memos, and organizing events related to Middle Eastern politics.
This experience has honed my research, writing, and communication skills, and has given me a strong
foundation for a career in foreign policy.

I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Department’s important work in securing
American interests abroad. I believe this internship will be an invaluable step in my professional
development. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Joseph Zimbler
