Recapitulation of Descriptive and Prescriptive/Normative Value Judgement

B. Establishing a Purpose for the lesson This lesson was designed to help learners know how to react on critical issues that demand analysis and call for prompt actions.
C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the
Lesson Aside from your academic studies, you also become aware of the critical issues in the society. There have been so many
controversies and news in this world, and you may find yourself having your perspectives particularly on the critical issues that
demand sound analysis and call for prompt actions. As a junior high school student, you must learn to decide and make a clear stand
which one is good or bad, which one is desirable or undesirable, or which one is valuable or not valuable.

D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing

New Skills In the previous modules, you have learned how to react to lay value judgment on critical issues. When you make a claim about the
aesthetic, moral, or practical worth of something, you are having a value judgment. To make it clear, value judgments
prescribe certain attitudes towards the world instead of just describing it. Look at the following examples:
1. Descriptive : Harley is a student.
Prescriptive : Harley is a responsible student.

2. Descriptive : It is hard to make friends in school.

Prescriptive : It is good if you will make friends in school.

3. Descriptive : There are some cases of students who are cheating on assignments.
Prescriptive : It is unethical that some students cheat on assignments.

4. Descriptive : The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) pursued its “white sand” project in the Manila Bay.
Prescriptive : It is better if the DENR did not pursue its “white sand” project in the Manila Bay.

By studying the given examples, you realized that the descriptive statements only
describe the situation, but the prescriptive statements make claim about what
something should be.

are labeled prescriptive.
