Math Grade 8 Q1 Module 1 L2.Factoring-Of-Difference-Of-Two-Squares
LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Factors completely the difference of two squares.
Solve problems involving factoring of difference of
two squares.
Always see to it that every place you take will make you
realize how beautiful Baguio is. That's what we want you
to get on this educational trip.
Yes Ma’am!
Examples:
1. 𝑎2 − 16
Step 1: Find the square root of √𝑎2 = 𝑎
each term. √16 = 4
Step 2: Form two factors from (𝑎 + 4)(𝑎 − 4)
these square roots, one a sum,
and the other a difference.
2. 144𝑥 2 − 49𝑦 4
Step 1: Find the square root of √144𝑥 2 = 12𝑥
each term. √49𝑦 4 = 7𝑦 2
Step 2: Form two factors from (12𝑥 + 7𝑦 2 )(12𝑥 − 7𝑦 2 )
these square roots, one a sum,
and the other a difference.
𝑘2
4. −1
25
𝑘2 𝑎
Step 1: Find the square root of √ =
25 5
each term. √1 = 1
𝑘 𝑘
Step 2: Form two factors from ( + 1) ( − 1)
5 5
these square roots, one a sum,
and the other a difference.
5. 8𝑥 6 − 50𝑦 10
Step 1: Factor the common 2(4𝑥 6 − 25𝑦 10 )
monomial factor.
Step 2: Find the square root of √4𝑥 6 = 2𝑥 3
each term. √25𝑦 10 = 5𝑦 5
Step 3: Form two factors from (2𝑥 3 + 5𝑦 5 )(2𝑥 3 − 5𝑦 5 )
these square roots, one a sum,
and the other a difference.
Example:
Forty-nine less than the square of a number equals zero. Find the
number.
This is your first activity, before you can enter to our first
destination which is The Mansion.
ACTIVITY # 1
It’s great! I can see that you are enjoying your trip.
ACTIVITY # 2
1. 𝑥 2 − 9 = (𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 − 3)
2. 4𝑎36 − 16 = (2𝑎6 + 4)(2𝑎6 − 4)
3. 36𝑎16 − 25 = (6𝑎4 + 5)(6𝑎4 − 5)
4. 121𝑔2 − 169ℎ4 = (11𝑔 + 13ℎ2 ) (11𝑔 − 13ℎ2 )
5. 196 − 𝑛6 𝑝 4 𝑞2 = (14 − 𝑛3 𝑝 2 𝑞) (14 − 𝑛3 𝑝 2 𝑞)
Is it hard?
Sure. Enjoy!
