(1) INTRODUCTION

This instruction manual is a guidebook to the Hensley Hydraulic Breaker. This manual gives instructions on how to
use the breaker safely and effectively.

Before operating the breaker, operators and maintenance personnel should read this manual carefully, making sure
they understand the contents.

Keep this manual readily available and ensure all personnel read it periodically.

The Hensley Hydraulic Breaker is installed on a hydraulic excavator as an attachment; therefore, this manual must
be kept together with your hydraulic excavator manual.

(2) SAFETY INFORMATION

Most accidents are caused by the failure to follow fundamental safety rules for the operation and maintenance of
machines. To avoid accidents, read, understand and follow all precautions and warnings in this manual and on the
machine before performing operation and maintenance. To identify safety messages in this manual and machine
labels, the following signal words are used:

This word is used on safety messages and safety labels where there is a potentially dangerous
WARNING
situation which could result in serious injury or death if the hazard is not avoided. These safety
messages or labels usually describe precautions that must be taken to avoid the hazard.
Failure to avoid this hazard may also result in serious damage to the machine.

This word is used on safety messages and safety labels for hazards, which could result in
CAUTION
minor or moderate injury if the hazard is not avoid. This word might also be used for hazards
where the only result could be damage to the machine.

NOTICE – This word is used for precautions that must be taken to avoid actions which could shorten the life of
the machine.

1
WARNING
 Improper operation can be hazardous and could result in serious injury or death.
 Operators and maintenance personnel should read this manual periodically and always keep
it readily available.
 Do not operate the breaker unless you understand and comply with the contents of this
instruction manual.
 If this manual is lost or becomes dirty, ask for a replacement manual from your Hensley
Distributor.
 If you transfer the breaker to another user, make sure you give this manual to the new owner.

Hensley Attachments cannot predict every circumstance which might involve a potential hazard in operation and
maintenance. Therefore, the safety messages in this manual and on the machine may not include all possible safety
precautions. If any procedures or actions not specifically recommended or allowed in this manual are used, you
must be sure you and others can do such procedures and actions safely and without damaging the machine. If you
are unsure about the safety of some procedures, contact Hensley or a Hensley Distributor.

(3) APPLICATIONS

The Hensley Hydraulic Breaker is designed to be used primarily for the following work:

 Demolition of rock.
 Demolition of concrete and secondary breaking.
 Demolition of asphalt and secondary breaking.
 Secondary demolition of rock.
 Quarry applications.
 Demolition of buildings.
 Road construction.

Please consult Hensley or your Hensley Distributor in case of tunnel work, under water work, working in extreme heat,
cold or dusty environment or any other ”special application”.

(4) OPERATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Operators must be trained before operating a hydraulic breaker and must obey all rules at the worksite and local
regulations, which affect the operator and equipment.

2
(5) GENERAL PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFETY

WARNING
When operating the hydraulic breaker, read the instruction manual for the hydraulic excavator and
obey the safety requirements.

SAFETY RULES AT THE WORK SITE

 Only trained and authorized personnel can operate and maintain the machine.
 Follow all safety rules, precautions and instructions when using the breaker.
 Follow the rules for group work when more than 2 people are working together.

PROTECTION AGAINST FALLING OR FLYING OBJECTS

 When operating a hydraulic breaker, install a front guard on the cab. Also place a laminate
coating sheet over the windshield.
 For work in mines, tunnel or other places where there is a danger of falling rocks, fit a FOPS
(falling object protective structure). Also place a laminate coating sheet over the upper window.
 When operating a breaker, make sure you close the front window.
 During operation, make sure all personnel are out of range of materials, which may fly up.

CLOTHING AND PERSONAL PROTECTION ITEMS

 Depending on the type of job, do not forget to wear a hard hat, safety goggles, safety boots
mask and gloves. Especially when operating a mini-excavator where a cabin is not installed on
the machine, it is essential to wear a hard hat, protective goggles, safety boots, a mask and
gloves.

DO NOT DISASSEMBLE

 The hydraulic breaker contains a high volume of pressurized nitrogen gas. It can therefore be
dangerous if the breaker is not dismantled correctly. As a result, if the breaker needs service,
please contact Hensley or an authorized Hensley distributor/service depot.

UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATION

 Non-approved modifications can cause injury and damage.

 Consult your Hensley distributor for advice before making any modifications. Hensley will not
accept responsibility for any injury or damage caused by any unauthorized modifications.

WARNING – HIGH TEMPERATURE OIL

Do not remove the hydraulic hose immediately after stopping the hydraulic breaker. The oil reaches
a very high temperature during operation and may possibly cause burns. Remove hose only when
the temperature has dropped.

4
WARNING – HIGH PRESSURE OIL

The oil pressure in the hydraulic circuit remains high immediately after the hydraulic breaker has
been stopped. The oil may spurt out from the hose cap when the hose is removed. Remove the
hose only after switching off the engine of the excavator and releasing the pressure in the hydraulic
hose/system.

A CRANE SHOULD BE USED FOR HANDLING HEAVY MATERIAL

 Assembly and disassembly work should be performed in a flat area.

 A signal must be decided in advance for the work if more than two people are involved.
 Make sure that a crane is used for lifting if the material weight exceeds 50lbs.
 When dismantling heavy parts, support the part as it is removed.
 Do not work on materials that are being lifted by one means or another, put them on a
worktable.
 When assembling and disassembling the hydraulic breaker, make sure the breaker is well
balanced.
 Never remain under material, which is being lifted by crane.
 Keep away from material, which is being lifted.

USE SUITABLE TOOLS

It is very dangerous to use worn and broken tools and to misuse tools. Use the proper tools for
maintenance.

POSITION THE HYDRAULIC BREAKER

Position the hydraulic breaker in a stable and flat place to prevent it from over turning.

(7) PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

JTHB-08, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50

(1) Upward movement (2) Reversing (3) Downward movement (4) Impact

(1) Upward movement

Oil flows into chambers 1 and 9: the control valve is pressed in the downward direction.
The piston moves in the upward direction toward the cushion chamber 5.
Oil in the opposite chamber 4 is discharged through chamber 6 and 7.

(2) Reversing direction

When the lower flange fills with oil, it reaches chamber 2. At this point both chamber 8 and 9 exert the same
pressure on the flange but the control valve moves in the upward direction due to the area difference between
the flanges.

(3) Downward movement

When the control valve rises and reaches chamber 9, the flow moves through chamber 6 then 4.
Due to the difference in area between the piston flange and the force from the cushion chamber pressure, the
piston accelerates downwards.

(4) Impact
The piston hits the chisel. At this point the mid-section of the piston reaches chamber 2 and as a result chamber
8 releases the pressure through chamber 2 and 3.
When chamber 8 is empty, as chamber 9 is constantly pressurized, the valve moves in the downward direction.

Repetition of the cycle mentioned above results in continuous blows.

(13) INSPECTION AND LUBRICATION PRIOR TO OPERATION
The hydraulic breaker is an attachment to the hydraulic excavator. Read the instruction manual for the hydraulic
excavator carefully and carry out an inspection prior to operation. Also carry out the inspection and lubrication of
the hydraulic breaker as specified below.

13-1 INSPECTION PRIOR TO OPERATION

Check for loose bolts and nuts and oil leakage from the hydraulic breaker bracket as well as the piping of the
hydraulic breaker. Repair if required.

13-2 LUBRICATION OF CHISEL

WARNING
When greasing, make sure the chisel (1) is firmly pressed into the chisel holder and do not apply
the grease excessively. Otherwise, the grease will go into the top of the chisel, which could
damage the dust and oil seal installed at the lower cylinder due to its pressurization.
This could cause a malfunction of the breaker and also contaminate the hydraulic oil and
deteriorate the pump performance.

(14) OPERATION OF HYDRAULIC BREAKER

WARNING
 When operating the hydraulic breaker, ensure to use the piping for the hydraulic breaker.
 If there is a ”Hydraulic Breaker Mode” on the excavator, change to that mode.
 If piping on the excavator is set up for the hydraulic crusher, 1) the excessive hydraulic oil
might be supplied to the hydraulic breaker. 2) Wrong pedaling creates the high pressure to
the low pressure piping of the hydraulic breaker. In both cases, it could cause damage to the
hydraulic breaker.

 The hydraulic breaker is an attachment to the hydraulic excavator. Follow the instruction manual for the
hydraulic excavator when starting the machine.
 Set up the excavator to operate the hydraulic breaker. If there is a ”Hydraulic Breaker Mode” on the excavator,
change to that mode. Position the throttle of the excavator (engine RPM) at the mark for the hydraulic breaker.
Then, follow the excavator manual for operation.

14-1 OPERATION OF HYDRAULIC BREAKER

 Place the breaker against the object at a 90-degree

angle.

CAUTION
Ensure the front part of the excavator is not raised
too high.
After the material is broken, take caution since the
balance of the excavator will become unstable.

 When operating the breaker, raise the chisel against

the object and the front portion of the excavator
about 2-inches from the ground.

24
 When breaking an object which is large and hard,
start where the rock can be easily broken.

 After striking the same point continuously for 1

minute without the rock breaking, change to another
area of the rock.

 When the breaker is set to break an object, always

place the breaker 90 degrees to the object you are
demolishing.

 During impact, prevent blank blows by using the

breaker properly.

25
 As soon as the material is broken, immediately
remove your foot from the operating pedal to stop
striking the material.

14-2 PRECAUTIONS DURING OPERATION

Do not use the breaker in the following manner, as this will reduce the life of the breaker and may result in reduced
safety.

CAUTION
Do not operate the breaker when the cylinder on
the excavator is fully extended (stroke-end). It is
essential to have about 2-inches of stroke in the
cylinder.
Ignoring this instruction will lead to the hydraulic
cylinder being damage.

CAUTION
Do not pry the chisel after it has penetrated into
the material.

This will lead to tie rod or chisel breakage. Also
premature wear of the chisel bushing may occur.

CAUTION
Make sure you do not hit the boom with the chisel
during operation.

This will lead to damage to the hydraulic breaker
and excavator.

26
CAUTION
Avoid hitting material abruptly with the chisel.
This can cause damage to the breaker, bracket,

boom and swing parts on the excavator.

CAUTION
Do not use the breaker to move material.
This can cause damage to the breaker, breaker
bracket, excavator boom, arm and swing parts.

CAUTION
Do not lift materials with the breaker.
This will cause damage to the breaker and
breaker bracket and is a dangerous maneuver.

CAUTION
Do not operate the breaker under water.
Do not put any part of the breaker into water ◯
except for the chisel.
This may cause damage to the hydraulic breaker

and excavator.

When using the breaker under water, refer to the instructions for “UNDERWATER APPLICATION”

the pump performance.

19-2 CAUTION FOR UNDERWATER APPLICATION

CAUTION
Underwater application is operated under very tough working conditions compared with working
on land.
When the supply of air is stopped, the water infiltrates in not only the hydraulic breaker, but also
the hydraulic equipment of the excavator and can cause fatal issues.

1. Before warming up the hydraulic excavator, always inspect the hydraulic oil tank to determine if emulsification
has occurred by water entering the system.

CAUTION
Make sure air is being supplied to the hydraulic breaker before it is put into the water and
continue until it is removed from the water.

2. Supply air to the hydraulic breaker as you put the breaker into the water and perform the application.

CAUTION
During operation of the breaker, make sure the air is going into the breaker. If the air stops or
you see oil floating to the surface, stop the operation immediately and lift the breaker out of the
water.

58
CAUTION
Never use the breaker in the horizontal or curled

×
position during underwater operation.

 If the breaker is used in these positions, water will

enter the breaker and will become the cause of
trouble to the breaker or will contaminate the
hydraulic oil in the hydraulic excavator, in this case
the performance of the hydraulic pump will

×
deteriorate very quickly.

Fig.1
 When operating the hydraulic breaker underwater
always operate within the limits of diagram 1.

3. Remove debris as soon as possible and operate the

as efficiently as possible.

 If the chisel holder (A) or bracket (C) is in contact with

the work, the chisel (B) will not be in positive contact
D
with the material and may blank blow or will not
C
transfer the energy to the material properly.
A
 When blows per minute, air pressure or the value of
pressure control gauge are down, the breaker might
be in blank blow operation. In this case change the
impact point.

59
CAUTION
During operation, if the air pressure gets down and the blow speed does not change, there is a
possibility the air hose (D) has been damaged. In this case, stop operation of the breaker and
bring the breaker out of the water to check the air hose (D).

4. Every 5 min. of operation, lift the breaker in the air and

drain the water.

CAUTION E

Check the air hose (D) and hydraulic hose (E) for
damage, also check the connection areas for D
loosening.

Press the chisel The chisel is not

5. During operation, grease every 2 hours. in firmly pressed in
 Grease the chisel with the chisel pressed into
the breaker.

○ ×
WARNING
When greasing, make sure the chisel is firmly pressed into the chisel holder and do not apply the
grease excessively. Otherwise, the grease will go into the top of the chisel, which could damage
the dust and oil seal installed at the lower cylinder due to its pressurization.
This could cause a malfunction of the breaker and also contaminate the hydraulic oil and
deteriorate the pump performance.

60
19-3 PRECAUTIONS AFTER UNDERWATER USAGE

CAUTION
During the use of the breaker in ocean water, rust will develop much quicker, as a result wash
the bracket, hydraulic breaker body and the inside of the chisel holder with pure water thoroughly.

1. After using the hydraulic breaker under water set

the N2 gas pressure at 0.4~0.5Mpa (4~5kg/cm2)

61
CAUTION
When the piston (6) is pressed up, oil may leak out from the hose adapter (C). In this case clean
the spilled oil using a rag.

7. Press the piston (6) up into the breaker. If any gas pressure remains in gas chamber (B), discharge the
nitrogen gas completely from the gas chamber.

8. Assemble the gas valve plug (3).

9. Assemble the plug to the hose adapter (C). At this time make sure foreign particles do not enter the hose.

3 C
6 A D

CAUTION
If the hydraulic oil has changed to a whitish color or shows deterioration, water may have entered
the equipment. At this time it is necessary to disassemble and inspect the hydraulic breaker and
the excavator.

10. Using a cloth, clean the inside area of the chisel holder for moisture and foreign particles. Apply an anti-rust
spray to sections (A) and (D) to prevent rust.

11. Assemble the Hex O-ring plug to section (A).

 For the areas where paint is removed, use the following specification paint.
Rust prevention primer; Polyurethane resin primer
Surface paint; Polyurethane resin paint

62
CAUTION
After using the breaker underwater and the breaker is not used for more than 3 days, it is
necessary to disassemble, wash and remove rusted areas in the hydraulic breaker.

 During disassembly or assembly, all seals must be replaced. Contact Hensley or your Hensley
Distributor.

CAUTION
When using a breaker on land and the breaker has been set up for underwater use, remove the
45-degree elbow (2) from the breaker and assemble the air cap (7), (8), (9).

CAUTION
Clean the parts after removing them and put them into the toolbox for storage.
