A. Review: Ask: What is sieving?
Ans: (Sieving - the process of separating fine particles
from the larger particles by using a sieve)
Give examples of materials that can be separated
through sieving.
Ans: (at home - draining the water from a pot of noodles.
construction site - separating fine gravel from
coarse gravel.
Laboratory - using filter paper to separate a
liquid and precipitate.
school: - separating the chalk from the chalk
Dust.)
What is handpicking?
Handpicking is a separation technique used to remove unwanted impurities from the mixture by
hand. It involves simply picking out substances by hand and separating them from others. The
handpicking method can be used when items differ on the basis of color, shape, and weight.)

the performance of each group.
Process the output of each group.
Guide Questions:
- What are the different methods/techniques for separating mixtures mentioned in the activity?
- Cite one example of a mixture and identify the appropriate method to separate the mixture.
-How important are these tools in our daily living?
E. Elaborate
Teacher’s Input
Winnowing is the method in which heavier components of the mixture are separated from the
lighter substances with the help of wind. This method is used for separating grains from husk after the
process of threshing. In winnowing the mixture is allowed to fall from the height. The lighten
components get separated from the heavier ones because of the wind. It is used to separate lighter
husks from heavier grains like wheat.
The benefits of winnowing
1. Convenient, easy, and you don’t need any machines
2.Less cost in production- By the use of winnowing, farmers have no need to buy machines to
separate grain from chaff.
3.Easier to teach- This method doesn't require high-level skills; it can be practiced by anyone.
4. Environment friendly- This doesn't use any machine only air in the environment.
Filtration is a technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid.
Benefits of separating mixtures in the community through filtration
1. Through this, we can have clean and filtered drinking water.
2. This is also used to separate the solid particles from the liquid.
3. We can also filter the water that has waste before letting it out from factories or buildings so as not
to be harmed or poisoned.
4. We use this separation to process a supply of salt for us. Or transform the salt water into a
freshwater form.
5. By doing this, we can create or make medicines by getting the nutrients from a substance.
Generalization (Values integration)
1. What are the benefits of separating the mixture through filtering and winnowing?
2. Describe the benefits of filtering and winnowing.
Application
Identify the method by which the given mixtures will be separated. 1. 1. It separates heavier
components of the mixture from the lighter substances with the help of the wind.
2. A mixture of liquid and tiny particles of solid that have not been dissolved can be separated
through this method.
3. Which separating tool can be used to separate paddy rice and wheat?
4. It can also be used in separating rice grains from its husks.
5. Coconut milk can be separated from the remains of grated coconut using a strainer.
F. Evaluation
Choose the letter of the correct answer.
1. Which of the following statement is correct about separating mixture through a filter?
A. The liquid passes through sieve but the solid particles are left behind.
B. Insoluble substances from a liquid can be separated by using a fil-ter.
C. The liquid cannot passed in a filter.
D. All of the above
2. It is the methods by which water treatment is done to separate some impurities and makes it
potable for drinking.
A. Evaporation B. Decantation C. Filtration D. Winnowing
3. The following are the benefits of filtration, except one.
A. Coconut milk can be separated through filtration.
B. Can separate small particles of sand from water.
C. Uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from a
D. Separating heavier components from the
4. Your sister bought 10 kilos of rice from the market. When she arrived home, she found out that the
rice she bought had impurities, like chaff and light husks. How will you separate the impurities in it?
A. Separate the chaff from the rice using a winnower.
B. Use a filter cloth to filter the impurities.
C. Use magnets to separate the impurities in it.
D. Never mind, anyway, it will be separated when you wash it with water.
5. Why is winnowing important to the farmers?
A. It is not convenient, and not easy to use.
B. Farmers don’t need to buy machines to separate the grain from chaff.
C. This method requires high-level skills, it cannot be practiced by anyone.
D. It is not environmentally friendly.
G. Extend
On a short bond paper, paste a picture or draw a picture of the winnowing and filtration method in
separating the mixture and enumerate its benefits below its picture.
