In my undergraduate years, I became a scholar of the Department of Science and

Technology under Junior Level Science High School (JLSS). This scholarship is anchored

with Republic Act 10612 which an act expanding the coverage of the Science and

Technology (S&T) and strengthening the teaching of Science and Mathematics in secondary

schools. With this, upon graduation we are entitled to render return service equivalent to the

amount of year where we enjoyed the benefits of the said scholarship. On the other hand, the

Department of Education has given us (scholar) a provisional status of which we must take

and pass the licensure examination for teachers within the span of five years if we wish to

continue the teaching profession. I started teaching on September 7, 2021, at the secondary

school located at Kagawasan, Dimataling Zamboanga del Sur. In my one year of residing in

this institution, as of now, I can not directly say that this is the profession I wanted. And I am

still absorbing the system.

TEACHER! TEACHER! By Fr. Ruben Vellote

In the context of teaching and learning process, there are three (3) elements necessary

for this course to take place. According to the writer, these elements are information,

knowledge, and wisdom. He called these elements as gifts. Let’s dig deeper what the writer

intends to stress.

(1) Information: as connotated by him, this is somewhat a kind of priceless gift that the

teacher could give to the learner. He even defined this gift as the “easiest in the world to

give”. This constitutes the universal phenomena, facts, and events, e.g., weather condition,

current country’s condition, current events, and places. In a nutshell, this first element is just

merely conveying and gathering of data. In my early education, I remember a conventional

teacher who love to relay information about the current trend of the global population, and

it’s helpful since I could take the glimpse of what is happening in the real world. Every lesson

that has been or will be delivered without interaction or discussion then falls with the first

element. However, conveying and gathering of information with insights, opinions and

perspective about the information given is called knowledge, which is the second gift.

(2) Knowledge: In this element, classroom discussion seems to be the most widely method of

imparting knowledge. He even elaborated that exchange of ideas and opinions among

learners and between teacher and learners challenge the intellect and enhance knowledge of

the involved individuals. He also stipulated that this type of intellectual activity does not only

occur inside the four corners of the classroom. It happens also in barbershops, corner stores

and public parks. I can still remember of different persons arguing over politics. Even in our

recent situation, as the national election is upcoming some showed their sentiments, supports
and conception about the politician. In this case, the writer highlighted that the second

element is no longer a gift to be shared but property to be defended.

(3) Wisdom: The last but considered as the crucial element of the process. In this element,

the writer dissected this into three components: the humility, contemplation, and witnessing.

He highlighted that the teacher should not be willing to teach but also to learn. The possibility

of learning from the students is higher and must be happened. In here, the teachers should

eagerly listen to what the students feel. He also highlighted that teacher should not listen only

to his/her students but to every person, to every situation or events, and to everything around.

The second is contemplative as defined by the writer as acknowledging the presence of a

divine God, no matter the situation is, it may be good or bad. And as the teacher is changed

and impacted by the students the teacher become more and more prepared to offer

himself/herself as a source of insight and healing to the student. This is called witnessing.

It seems that the writer is trying to convey the information that anyone could be a teacher by

possessing one of these elements, but not anyone could be as effective as a teacher who

possessed the complete elements. You might be a teacher who just share information and

interact with the students but does not acknowledge the presence of da divine providence. For

us to be effective, one must possess the elements before teaching.
