U sing social media does not explic-
itly affect the youth because it
depends on how you use this platform.
And social media has both advantages
and disadvantages.
Social media has become the primary
source of information for everything,
particularly this pandemic. There are
numerous social media platforms, such
as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok,
and others, where everyone can stay
up to date on local and global events.
Everyone has the ability to communicate
with their loved ones and share their
thoughts, but doing so can lead to stress
and depression.
According to Althea Del Valle, a Grade 10

Social media has its advantages. First

L ast March 2020, when the lockdown
started, many Filipinos lost their jobs
and even closed their own businesses. In
response to the rising number of covid-19
cases, the Philippine government imposed

promote social distancing and restrict the
movement of people, both of which have
a huge impact on the country's economy.

sult of the ideas they see on social media,
many people suffer from anxiety and de-
pression. Furthermore, as a result of fake
news, people, particularly young people,
are quickly convinced of issues that are
causing stress and can lead to low self-es-
teem. Hacking, personal information, and
privacy can all be easily compromised
and shared on the Internet.
In terms of business, On the one
hand, predicting what your audience
will like and discuss is difficult. Because
their needs are constantly changing and
evolving, keeping track of what content
they are likely to respond to can be a little

some issues concerning body
shaming with male classmates through
the use of the internet.
Last February 3, 2021, Wednesday, a
body shame tweet regarding a woman
who posted it, who committed the body

Especially for millennials like us who are
facing modular and online classes right
now. But it can harm others if it’s used in
a bad way that can affect their lives and
their future.

I nteraction between human and com-
puters has greatly increased during
this time of pandemic. The ability to
access computers and the internet
has become increasingly important
to completely immerse oneself in the
economic, political, social aspects, and
education. However, not everyone has
access to this technology.
The idea of the "digital divide" refers
to the growing gap between the under-
privileged members of society, especially
the poor, rural, elderly, and handicapped
portion of the population who do not
have access to computers or the internet;
and the wealthy, middle-class, and young
Filipinos living in city and rural areas who
have access.
Although the number of Filipinos with
access to computers and the Internet
continues to soar on a yearly basis, the
digital divide also continues to grow. On
the one hand, sections of society already
connected - such as higher income,
educated households are adopting newer

even more. On the other, groups with
traditionally lower rates for Internet
and computer usage continue to lag far
behind.
With the “no vaccine, no classes” poli-
cy, the Department of Education (DepEd)
and the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED), which oversees colleges and uni-
versities, put together distance learning
options that include online platforms,
offline modules, or a combination of the
two, called blended or flexible learning.
But distance learning has made inequi-
ties, especially around the digital divide,
more apparent than ever before.

showing the so-called “resourcefulness”
– students had to climb trees and hike
mountains – for the sake of compliance of
school requirements.
According to Chino Gaston’s report on
“24 Oras”, six-year-old Arvin Curangcu-
rang’s relatives decided to build him a
small tree house on top of a hill in the
middle of a rice field because that was the
only place with a data signal in their area.

Families who have more disposable
income find themselves in a more fortu-
nate situation. All the basic necessities
are easy for them to get – easily purchase
a gadget and get reliable internet access
for online learning set up. They are still
more likely than others to have good
access to digital resources.
However, for people at the bottom of
the socio-economic ladder, this is not
just the case. Low-income families faced
multi-facets of challenges and poverty
brought by the pandemic. These people
do not have enough food to eat. They are
trying their best to make a living every
day.
Undeniably, everyone is affected by
the COVID-19 pandemic, but the impacts
are greater felt in communities where
privilege does not extend.
Furthermore, it is worrisome as millions of
students will struggle to continue online
education with limited digital resources
in these unprecedented times; an obvi-
ous case of a digital divide.

Perfection isn’t real: How does a 13-year-old cope with the

problems around her?

C oping Mechanism - Before the pan-

demic, we all had our own normal
lives. We used to do a lot of fun and
normal things. And today, we don’t
know how to do some of those things
without getting sick or becoming sick.
How do we deal with the issues we
face?
Because of the problem we encounter,
this is one of the things we continue to
do today. There are numerous coping
mechanisms that can assist us in main-
taining our emotional well-being. There
are also methods for us to overcome the
problems that surround us. While we
are dealing with serious issues, we need
to maintain a sense of balance, and one
positive coping pattern provides extra
resources that can help that person deal
with the demand of a stressor. And one
of those who continues to do so is a
student we’ll call “Franz.”
A 13-year-old student claims that she
has always had coping mechanisms in
place to keep her away from the negative
vibes and stress around her. One of these
is to get away from the source of stress.
One of her objectives is to maintain a
positive attitude at all times in order to
avoid problems. And to be the source of
joy for his family and friends.
As a grade 7 student, it is difficult for
her because she was a new high school
student and currently facing online
classes. She has a lot of new classmates
but they are shy about talking to each
other. That, hopefully, will be someone
she can lean on and talk to when she has
a problem with other things or school.
But that didn’t deter her; she had new
classmates with whom she had commu-
nicated, reconciled, and maintained a
positive relationship.
There are also many things she can’t
do right now due to the pandemic.
Biking is one of her favorite hobbies,
especially when she has free time. Right
now, she is now afraid to do so because
the number of cases in their area is
increasing. But she never gave up hope
that one day everything would be back
to normal.
On the other hand, the pandemic
and other issues did not stop her from
enjoying high school journey and being
a citizen. Because she can’t go out, she
spends her time talking, sharing, and
maintaining a good relationship with
her parents. She has more time to talk
to and bond with her family. One of
their favorite pastimes is to relax by
watching movies on Netflix. She also had
new hobbies, such as playing chess and
exercising.
Trust in God, the most powerful of
all. If you continue to believe in God,
everything around you will be positive.

We may have different ways of dealing

the various coping mechanisms that can
be used in today’s world without despair.

Climate change is the notable long-term variation of the average pattern of climate for over decades or longer. Climate change in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) usage refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified changes in the mean and/or the variability of its properties, and that persists
for an extended period. Climate change is global phenomenon that can affect the world abruptly. It is usually triggered by our substandard actions, the way we act
freely is the way climate change could react abominably. When this phenomenon is triggered, the world could change the way we don’t want it to be.

Causes
T he unbalanced climate results to the resistance
of the earth to fight the tight opposition which
leads the world to unhealthy threat. The opposition
is referring to the causes of interrupting Climate
Change. We have two causes of climate change.
First is the Anthropogenic Cause or the actions
made by people that put their own home to danger.
According to National Aeronautics and Space Admin-
istration (NASA), human activities are changing the
natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning
of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the con-
centration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. This hap-
pens because the coal or oil burning process combines
carbon with oxygen in the air to make carbon dioxide.
To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture,
industry, and other human activities has increased
concentrations of greenhouse gases.
Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from es-
caping. Long-lived gases that remain semi-permanent-
ly in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or
chemically to changes in temperature are described as
“forcing” climate change. Gases, such as water vapor,
which respond physically or chemically to changes in
temperature are seen as “feedbacks.”
According to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) on its Fifth Assessment Report, Anthro-
pogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased
since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic
and population growth, and are now higher than ever.
This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon
dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are unprece-
dented in at least the last 800,000 years. Their effects,
together with those of other anthropogenic drivers,
have been detected throughout the climate system
and are extremely likely to have been the dominant
cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th
century.
Human influence on the climate system is clear, and
recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases
are the highest in history. Recent climate changes
have had widespread impacts on human and natural
systems.
Second is Natural Causes or the natural disasters we
have in this world. According to National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA), some causes of
climate change are natural. These include changes in
Earth’s orbit and in the amount of energy coming from
the sun. Ocean changes and volcanic eruptions are
also natural causes of climate change.
The earth has gone through warm and cool phases in
the past, and long before humans were around. Forces
that contribute to climate change include the sun’s
intensity, volcanic eruptions, and changes in naturally
occurring greenhouse gas concentrations. But records
indicate that today’s climatic warming—particularly
the warming since the mid-20th century—is occurring
much faster than ever before and can’t be explained by
natural causes alone. According to National Aeronaut-
ics and Space Administration (NASA), these natural
causes are still in play today, but their influence is too
small or they occur too slowly to explain the rapid
warming seen in recent decades.
Indeed, studies show that solar variability has played
a role in past climate changes. For example, a decrease
in solar activity coupled with an increase in volcanic
activity is thought to have helped trigger the Little
Ice Age between approximately 1650 and 1850, when
Greenland cooled from 1410 to the 1720s and glaciers
advanced in the Alps. It’s reasonable to assume that
changes in the Sun’s energy output would cause the
climate to change, since the Sun is the fundamental
source of energy that drives our climate system.

Effects
T his global phenomenon is an alarming sign to
human activities that exacerbates the condition
of the Earth. All subject in this world, can be a
thing, animal, person or every single thing can be
damaged and affected by this phenomenon called
Climate Change.
Based on research, effects of climate change include
higher temperatures, increases in precipitation patterns,
rising sea levels, weather-related natural disasters,
increased drought and decreased food security. The
annual global temperature, or Earth’s average surface
temperature, has increased 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit
(0.8 degrees Celsius) since the 1880s. Two-thirds of
that increase has occurred since 1975. Over 36 million
kilotons of CO2 were emitted in 2014. Emissions in 2018
are projected to increase by 2.7 percent compared to
a 1.6 percent rise in 2017 — emission rates had not in-
creased in three years. China and the United States each
produce about a third of the world’s carbon emissions.
As of 2018, oil use continues to rise globally, as it has for
five consecutive years. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol was an
international agreement intended to cut greenhouse
gas emissions, but many nations failed to hold to the
protocol’s standards. In 2018, the Paris Agreement was
signed by over 200 nations with the purpose of pre-
venting global temperatures from reaching a 3.6 degree
Fahrenheit increase (2.0 degrees Celsius), and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions to a rate where they can be
naturally absorbed by the environment — all between
2050 and 2100. Under the Paris Agreement, developed
nations agreed to subsidize the efforts of developing
nations to meet the standards of the agreement and
begin using more renewable energy sources. Progress
will be reviewed every five years.
The State of the Global Climate 2020 finds the year
was one of the three warmest on record, despite a cool-
ing La Niña event. The global average temperature was
about 1.2° Celsius above the pre-industrial (1850-1900)
level. The six years since 2015 have been the warmest
on record, with 2011-2020 the warmest decade on
record. The report documents indicators of the climate
system, including greenhouse gas concentrations,
increasing land and ocean temperatures, sea level rise,
melting ice and glacier retreat and extreme weather. It
also highlights impacts on socioeconomic develop-
ment, migration and displacement, food security and
land and marine ecosystems.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC), the extent of climate change effects
on individual regions will vary over time and with the
ability of different societal and environmental systems
to mitigate or adapt to change. An IPCC special report
on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above
pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas
emission pathways, in the context of strengthening the
global response to the threat of climate change, sus-
tainable development, and efforts to eradicate poverty.
Philippines is the third most vulnerable country to
climate change resulting to the 2017 world risk report.
Specifically, based on National Integrated Climate
Change Database Information and Exchange System
(NICCDIES), impacts of climate change in the Philippines
are immense, including annual losses in GDP, changes
in rainfall patterns and distribution, droughts, threats
to biodiversity and food security, sea level rise, public
health risks, and endangerment of vulnerable groups
such as women and indigenous people.
We are all affected by this phenomenon so every effect
gives impact on each and every one of us, we take a
big part on the occurrence of the world. What we do to
our environment can come back stronger than what we
expect. Do your part as a student, concerned citizen,
and even just a human.

I t is poignant to witness the sustainability of the Earth under the different threats coming
from the Climate Change. The future of one defines the act of one another.
Our climate challenge is a shared global challenge – and it is largely an energy challenge.
Energy accounts for over two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions. This means energy must
be at the heart of any solution.
There is no time to lose. Analysis by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
clearly shows us that global emissions need to be reduced to net-zero within the next few decades
to avoid a dangerous increase in global temperatures. The coronavirus pandemic is resulting in
a drop in emissions this year, but that came at an unacceptable human and economic cost – and
there are already signs that emissions are rebounding as economies reopen.
The economic recovery following the 2008 global financial crisis brought with it the biggest
jump in emissions in history. The world cannot afford to repeat that mistake. In order to reach our
global climate and sustainable energy goals, we need to quickly put emissions into sharp structur-
al decline. This requires a dramatic acceleration in the transitions to clean, sustainable energy that
are already underway in many countries and industries.
The good news is we already have affordable, reliable technologies that can put the peak in
global emissions behind us and start the drive down to net zero. The spectacular rise of renewable
technologies like solar panels and wind turbines in recent years has shown us what is possible. De-
ployed quickly and on a major scale, the clean energy technologies we have at our disposal right
now can bring about the kind of decline in energy-related emissions that would put the world on
track for our longer-term climate goals.
The ambitious recovery plans that governments are pursuing to counter the damage caused
by the pandemic offer a unique opportunity to drive much greater investment in key energy
technologies such as more efficient vehicles and buildings, renewables and state-of-the art elec-
tricity grids. According to recent analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA), together with
the International Monetary Fund, a combination of policy actions and targeted investments over
the next three years could bring about a sustainable recovery, boosting global economic growth,
creating millions of jobs and making 2019 the definitive peak in global emissions.

CLIMATE
Change
Ensuring that this near-term, structural decline in emissions can take us all the way to net-zero
in the coming decades presents a further challenge – and one that also needs urgent, ambitious
action. Decarbonizing entire economies means tackling sectors where emissions are especially
difficult to reduce, such as shipping, trucks, aviation, heavy industries like steel, cement and chem-
icals, and agriculture. This will require the rapid development of many technologies that are still in
their very early stages today – some of them are barely out of the laboratory. Recent IEA analysis
has assessed the market readiness of 400 different technologies that will be needed, but finds that
only about half of the additional emissions savings needed to reach net-zero emissions by 2050
are available to the market today
The net-zero challenge calls for a step change in technology innovation in critical areas such as
enhancing energy efficiency, making low-carbon electricity the main source for heating buildings
and powering vehicles, capturing, storing and utilizing carbon dioxide before it escapes into the
atmosphere, realizing the potential of clean hydrogen across many industries, and massively
expanding the use of sustainable bioenergy.

Today, overall investment in clean energy innovation is increasing, but only gradually – far too
slowly to meet our challenges head on. Furthermore, the coronavirus pandemic is threatening to
reduce funding for vital research and development efforts. Governments and the private sector
both have critical roles to play in making sure investment in clean and sustainable energy innova-
tion increases rather than declines at this pivotal moment.
As the world confronts our shared climate challenge, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC) and the IEA are committed to providing evidence-based analysis. We cannot force
the world’s decision-makers to make smart and sustainable choices, but we can make clear the
consequences of the paths they choose and highlight how best to achieve their stated goals.
Organizations are proof that by working together, governments, companies, investors and
citizens from around the world can better understand the challenges we all face – and how to
overcome them. Put simply, we need a simultaneous focus on both ambitious, near-term reduc-
tions in emissions and accelerating investment in the full range of clean and sustainable energy
technologies necessary to get all the way to net zero.

I t’s one good idea that led a lot of
people to do the same act: The Com-
munity pantry that started in Maginha-
wa Street in Quezon City, which was
organized by Ana Patricia Non, in-
spired many citizens to adopt the same
idea of having their own community
pantries. It serves as today’s symbol of
hope amidst the continuing battle of
our country against Covid-19.
The idea spread throughout the nation
and a number of people in Calamba
City also started their own community
pantries to aid the hunger of our fellow
Calambeños. People have been seen
gathering and lining up even before
the sun rises just to provide something
for their families, but by doing so, they
are also putting their health at risk be-
cause physical distancing is not prop-
erly observed. There are two opposing
viewpoints on this topic: whether
to continue the community pantries
because they are a great help to all of
us, or to think of a better replacement
that will also serve its purpose while
adhering to strict health and safety
protocols during the pandemic.
Our government provided financial
assistance during the implementation of
Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ)
but still it is not enough to provide the
needs of a family and now, because of
the increasing number of Covid positives,
our city has been placed under modified
enhanced community quarantine
(MECQ), which means that no more
“ayuda” will be given to those affected by
the MECQ, which is why setting up even
a small community pantry is a great help
for those people who are still struggling
to put food on the table. Organizers
of a community pantry receive a lot of

compliments by doing such an act, but of
course, there will be criticism regarding
their intensions and the way they handle
the people lining up who are waiting for
their turn to get what they need in the
pantry.
According to Kevin Africa Adante,
“Ang nag udyok sa akin ay ang kalagayan

lumaki din ako sa hirap, dati nararana-
san ko nag uulam kami ng kape, asukal
kaya alam ko yung kalagayan ng bawat
isa na kumakalam ang sikmura at dahil
ngayon nasa ilalim padin tayo ng mecq,
kung saan kapos padin ang lahat at ang
iba naman ay na walang trabaho kaya
ako at ang aking team ay nag ka isa para
maisagawa ang community pantry, every
individual are welcome and any kind of
donations. Then bata palang talaga ako
passion ko nayung pag tulong sa aking
kapwa siguro isa ito sa call ng panginoon
na magkaroon ng ganitong gawain at
kami ang gawing instrumento para sa
mga taong naghihikahos sa buhay dahil
hindi naman lahat nakakatanggap ng
ayuda from our city government kung
kaya kaming mga kabataan ng parian ay
nag tulong tulong upang maging isang
ganap na proyekto ito at magkaroon
ng pagbabayanihan bilang isang
barangay,”and when asked about how he
handles the people lining-up, he said that

and Arts (LCBA) who organized his own
community pantry at Parian Calamba
City. Aside from him, there are also
other Calambeños who started their
own community pantries in Lecheria,
Masili, Lawa, and Real, which have helped
thousands of people. Furthermore, there
are community pantries that offer not
only food but also school supplies, pet
supplies, and other necessities. This also
goes to show that Bayanihan still lives on,
and there are still good Samaritans out
there who donate food and other goods
to the community pantries, and some of
them still donate financial assistance to
be spent in the stocks.
However, the good purpose of the
community pantries could be the reason
for another spike in the Covid-19 cases.
Based on our survey of some parents and
students, they recommended that giving
out food per household is a better way to
ensure the safety of one another.
According to an anonymous mother of
a Grade 10 student in LCBA “magba-
hay-bahay na lamang, mas lalong kakalat
ang virus kung ang mga tao mismo ang
pupunta” Adante also said that “Actually
mas maganda pa din ang bahay-bahay
dahil mas makikita mo yung kalagayan
ng bawat individual na tao o pamilya at
magkakaroon ng kaunting kamustahan
subalit nga ay tayo ay naka MECQ kaya
nagkaroon nalang ng community pantry
upang sila na lamang ang kumuha ng
kanilang pangangailangan.” A student
also stated that “Mas ayos ang pagbaba-
hay-bahay, sa hakbang na ito masisiguro
natin na lahat ng tao sa komunidad ay
magkakaroon ng ayuda at kahit papaano
ito ay sa patas na pamimigay.” Moreover,
Engelen Argoncillo, a mother of 5 and
a housewife who lined-up in one of the
Community pantries in Calamba, stated
that “Pumila ako ng maayos at talaga
namang napakadaming tao, nagdal-
awang isip pa ko kung tutuloy pa ba
o hindi na dahil nag-aalala rin ako na
baka mahawa ako ng virus lalo na’t may
pamilya akong iniingatan. Salamat sa
mga nagsasagawa ng community pantry
ngunit hindi mapipigilan ang mga taong
matindi ang pangangailangan kung saan
hindi na alintana ang social distancing at
bukod pa dito, tirik na tirik din ang araw,

despite the high risk of contracting the
virus, a lot of people will still support the
community pantries and continue to fall
in line because during these trying times,
they will see it as a blessing rather than a
health-threatening situation.
Helping our fellow citizens through
community pantries is a selfless act, it
shows our love and care for the people
in our society but their health is also a
priority. As of now the organizers of over
350 community pantries throughout
the Philippines are currently coordinat-
ing with the local government unit to
ensure the strict enforcement of health
and safety protocols like wearing of face
mask, face shield and observing physical
distancing as well as the guidelines of
the department of the interior and local
government (DILG) such as no harmful or
illegal good should be distributed which
includes cigarette and alcoholic drinks,
no fee should be asked even by the LGU
and etc. Those protocols and guidelines
should be properly and consistently
executed. In that way, we can make sure
that the community pantries will not
turn out to be a widespread community
transmission of Covid-19.
The organizers of the community
pantries have already taken action, and
it’s time for us to follow every health and
safety protocol so that the community
pantries sole purpose can continue and
be properly served, but if the protocols,
particularly the physical distancing,
continue to be a problem then maybe we
should consider another way of sharing
and donating goods with our fellow
citizens, like a mobile food pantry or food
pantry truck which will roam around the
community, and the people will just need
to wait for the truck to reach their area,
because the pantry is not only designated
in one location, the number of people
queuing may be reduced and the phys-
ical distancing can be easily observed.
Barangay patrol car can be borrowed
to be used as a mobile food pantry and
there will be some officials who will man-
age it. There’s nothing wrong with trying
different ways to help others as long as
it will be given without neglecting the
well-being of each other’s health.

Internet is a good source of in-
formation. It is an efficient strategic
tool to cope up with the fast-grow-
ing technology. However, the
influence of the internet on youth
is undeniably questionable, as the
internet/technologies are very good
at distracting people.
Online gaming is one of the wide-
ly used leisure activities by many
people. For some people, playing
video games has several reasons
to be played, for it can be a stress
reliever, challenge or competition,
relaxation, enjoyment, social inter-

stress. According to some research-
ers, it is beneficial. It enables the
