Types of Equation
Equation – statement that says two algebraic expression are equal
A=B
If an equation involves a variable then a solution to the equation is a number that when substituted to
the variable will make the equation true.
Identity – is an equation that is true for all allowable values of the variable.
Inconsistent Equation – is one that is false for all values of the variable.
Conditional Equation is one that is true for some but not for all allowable values of the variable
Ex.
Equivalent Equation
Equations are equivalent if they have exactly the same solution set.
Properties of Equality
Reflexive Property – the reflexive property states that any real number is equal to itself. A = A
Subtraction Property of Equality (SPE) – SPE states that subtracting the same number from both sides of
an equation yields an equivalent equation. If a = b then a – c = b – c
Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE) – multiplying the same nonzero number to both sides of an
equation yields an equivalent equation. If a = b then ac = bc
