Understanding Values in the
VUCA
(Volatile, Uncertain, Complex
and Ambiguous) World

Introduction

One of the most debated issues among millennials is on gender and

family roles. In this lesson, you are going to explore how literature contributes
to your understanding of the things that are presently happening to you as a
teenager and as a member of your community. You will learn how to
understand the common values teenagers share from the early days until
now.

Learning Competency

Analyze literature as a means of understanding values in the VUCA

(volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world.

Objectives

At the end of this Guided Learning Activity Kit, you are expected to:

1. compare and contrast information presented in different literary texts;

2. infer an author’s ideas in making reasonable generalizations about the
texts read;
3. make an analysis of a text by writing a personal response;
4. assess the relevance and truthfulness on information;
5. classify information based on the text’s purpose, types and form of writing;
6. interpret the challenges and opportunities described on a literary text;

Love Story
by Taylor Swift

We were both young when I first saw you

I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I'm standin' there on a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd and say, "Hello"
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwin' pebbles and my daddy said, "Stay away
from Juliet"
And I was cryin' on the staircase beggin' you, "Please don't go, " and I said

Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"

So I sneak out to the garden to see you

We keep quiet, 'cause we're dead if they knew

So close your eyes

Escape this town for a little while, oh oh
'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet"
But you were everything to me
I was beggin' you, "Please don't go, " and I said

Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone

I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say, "Yes"
Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it's real

Discussion

One of the best ways to understand literature is to check its elements: plot,
setting, characters, point of view, theme, symbolism, and conflict. It is on these
elements that you would be able to understand how these parts connect to create
the overall theme.

Lesson 1: Text Analysis

In analyzing a literary piece, narrate the plot or discuss what was said and
explain why a dialogue or a certain description is significant to the text. Take note
also of particular interpretations of a passage: For example, dialogues can illustrate
or can make you see or interpret the characteristics (values, opinion, emotions, and
feelings) of a character. This is often referred to as characterization.

It is clear in the play, Romeo and Juliet, that William Shakespeare, its
playwright, narrates not only about youth and the issues confronting them during
those times especially about arranged marriages and obedience to the expectations
of their elders; but also, of the gender roles. Below is the monologue or dialogue of
Romeo in the Balcony Scene of Romeo and Juliet that shows how he heartily love
Juliet that he would resist anything just to have her. This also shows how typical or
common are the young lover’s attitude as teenagers. This line also shows the
thoughtfulness of Romeo as a person head over heels in love:
“But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?
It is the east and Juliet is the sun!
Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief
That thou her maid art far more fair than she.”

Of course, literary pieces or any writing could influence you a lot in a variety
of ways. On a changing world, what you read would influence you also on how you
interpret changes and real-life situations. You somehow develop a certain
understanding or most times, some opinion about the ideas or thoughts of the
author. Forming an opinion is a positive outcome of reading.
However, one must be able to form an intelligent opinion that must be based
on what is truthful. For you to be able to form an intelligent opinion or to understand
the significance of the material to your current situation remember to:

1. Fact-check or research on the back story or background of the author or how

the literary text came to be for you to understand the situation within which
the author had written it that might have influenced the author.
2. Find some ideals or values that you can relate with.
3. Infer as to why a certain character did the action, what caused the reaction
by examining its relevance to the theme.

Guide questions:
1. What does the scene tell you about the character of Romeo?
2. What does Mercutio’s reply show about his attitude?
3. Who among the characters you have read on this ACT impressed you? Briefly
explain the values portrayed by this character that impressed you.

Assessment

Directions: There are three (3) differentiated activities listed below. Choose one
activity for you to accomplish. Write your answers on your paper.

1. Find in YouTube the ending part of "Desert Flower" film. Make a support
slogan denouncing or opposing the mutilation rituals and practices still
performed on girls by some other cultures. Use hashtag (#) and give a brief
explanation explaining your hashtag’s objective.

The film is based on the life of Waris Dirie, an international supermodel

who began life as a member of a nomadic tribe in Somalia. She was
circumcised, as is the custom in many African countries then sold to an
elderly man to be his fourth wife. Not wanting this, she escaped and walked
on the dessert for days.

On the film, she was quoted:

“Women’s loyalty has to be earned with trust and affection, rather than
barbaric rituals. The time has come to leave the old ways of suffering
behind” – (Waris Dirie, quote from Desert Flower)

2. Read the statement of Liza Soberano in a forum discussing violence against

women and children. Write at least one paragraph expressing your opinion
about violence and maltreatment of women and children.

“I find it so unfair that we women have to go out every day in fear of

getting catcalled, in fear of dressing a certain way and getting called out for the
way we’re dressed. I fear that my nieces and my future children won’t be able
to go out in a safe environment. That’s why I find it so important to start
spreading awareness to future generations as early as now so that we can
create a better future for everyone.

As a woman, as a Filipino artist, I think that women and influencers

alike should start speaking up,” she said. They can contribute not only
awareness about these issues but also encouragement and confidence to our
fellow women and children – that they need to learn to stand up for themselves.

9|Page
The norm of society has conditioned women and children to stay quiet
when dealing with hardships and struggles because nobody is going to do
anything anyway. Yet why do they also expect us women, women alike and
children, to remain resilient through these struggles? Change cannot be just the
responsibility of the people who need it most. They need the support of
everyone, especially those of the highest power, if we are to see true change.”

3. Imagine that you are the director of a new film of Romeo & Juliet. List down
at least two (2) songs that you might include in your filmed version of the play.
Focus on the Balcony Scene or the Parting Scene. Write an explanation where
in the play it would be played, and which lyric of the song will be played on
that particular scene and why.

Lesson 2: Classifying Information

Review

In analyzing selections, bear in mind that there are many aspects to literary
writing, and many ways to analyze it, but there are four basic categories of texts
namely: descriptive, narrative, expository, and argumentative. There are also
five main types of writing: expository, descriptive, narrative persuasive and
creative. Take for instance, the two examples of text below extracted from different
sources that discussed the issue on dolomite sand. See how these excerpts differ in
approaches and style.

Excerpt #1
“The dolomite controversy”
By Marit Stinus-Cabugon
Arturo Barrit, an official of the Associated Labor Unions and someone very
familiar with the mine and its effects on the environment, describes the dolomite
that is being shipped to Manila as “a byproduct of the high-grade dolomite,” which
“is used for beach rehabilitation and landscaping to add aesthetic value” to a
property (Facebook post, September 5). This byproduct — or “synthetic white
sand” — from the Alcoy dolomite quarry site has been used as “soil catalyst” or
soil conditioner in banana and pineapple plantations in Mindanao for years. This
once useless material which was given away for free to local government units
and private individuals now has great commercial value, Barrit writes in his
Facebook post.
Barrit has pointed to the destruction caused by the dolomite to the seabed
off Alcoy and Dalaguete. As the dolomite — high grade and byproduct alike — is
transferred to the ships and barges, “the particles or fragments hauled via the
open belt conveyor are carried by the wind flow” and find their way to the seabed.
Barrit, a diver himself, said he has seen seagrasses, corals and even turtle shells
covered with hardened dolomitic particles, several kilometers from where the
hauling takes place. Local fisherfolk have been complaining, writes Barrit.

Excerpt #2

FAST FACTS: What is dolomite sand, and how will it affect Manila Bay?

Here's basic information:

Used in construction
Dolomite, also known as calcium magnesium carbonate, is a non-metallic
material used in manufacturing bricks, mortar, cement, concrete, plastics, paving
materials, and other construction materials.

Hazards to people
There are a number of hazards dolomite can pose to handlers, according
to a 2012 safety data report by Texas distributor and builder Lehigh Hanson Inc.
Dolomite contains varying levels of crystalline silica, which can cause damage to
lungs or even cancer when it is breathed in. The material can also cause irritation
to the skin and eyes.
The Department of Health also attested to dolomite’s health risks,
especially the adverse reactions in humans when inhaled. Health Undersecretary
Maria Rosario Vergeire said that when ingested, dolomite can cause pain in the
stomach and result in diarrhea.
Hazards to Manila Bay
Moreover, environmental group Oceana Philippines warned that since the
sand does not naturally occur at the bay, the government could be destroying
both the natural ecosystem of Manila Bay as well as the source of the synthetic
sand.

Reading the two examples given, answer the following:

Discussion

The famous J.K. Rowling said “Understanding is the first step to acceptance,
and only with acceptance can there be recovery.” on her book Harry Potter and the
Goblet of Fire. Readers can also bear that nuggets of wisdom in mind as they go along
with the selections, greater understanding of history, events and emotions open up
if the reader is equipped with the skills of interpreting and valuing such information.
One of the skills one must have to be able to understand messages is to
classify information. In classifying information, keep in mind the following tips:
1. Establish a purpose that will serve as a framework in sorting the information
2. Use a graphic organizer that will show the relationship of things
3. Fill the organizer with the information on the text which will help you draw
conclusions
4. Research on the culture, historical context, social background of the author
that shaped his/her perspective or viewpoint and worldview she/he is
presenting

However, there are also some informations that are not written but they are
represented by infographics and graphics, some especially those found on social
media are not exhausted but rather made or posted to start debates and
conversations.
See the resulting reactions on a Facebook posts about a brain teaser
shown on the example below:

Some information also leaves the interpretation to the seer or often is

satirical or humorous in nature such as the “memes” below:

Assessment

Directions: Answer the following questions.

1. Does the excerpt of the selection below shock you? YES NO

A supposed ‘dead whale’ was seen on the shores of Naic, Cavite on May 11,
2017, which was in fact an art installation. What looked like a dead whale from
afar was really made of plastic waste up close.

The original Dead Whale installation in Cavite, a collaboration between

a non-governmental environmental organization and Dentsu Jayme Syfu led
by Creative Director Biboy Royong, was displayed for only three days and was
dismantled immediately to prevent the plastic waste used from going into the
ocean. Mounting the Dead Whale for a longer period of time will give more
people a chance to experience what it might feel like to encounter, or be
confronted by, a decomposing whale victimized by the increasing presence of
plastic in our oceans.

2. How would you categorize the text below as to its form of writing?

To illustrate my point, let me share my brief conversation with a French

student who was at that time complaining about the weather. He came into

my office all sweaty and bemoaning the scorching temperature. I told him that
he was about to experience the fun of summer and that it would be more fun
if he could find a perfect beach to enjoy. While talking, I showed him a travel
brochure showcasing the beauty of some of our islands, with photographs of
people frolicking on white-sand beaches. He began asking a few questions
about the islands.

3. Would the paragraph below convinced the reader to choose a certain path of
action?

The idea is to project a positive mindset and to develop a strategic way

of countering negative opinions on our country. Of course, more tourists and
good tourism also mean, among other things, more effective means of
transport to carry them around, as well as more travel guides to educate them
on our natural wonders and resources.
The effective promotion of tourism will mean a significant movement in
our economic chart. This is not a rocket-science mission but more of a
collective initiative in which everyone can actively participate.

After Apple-Picking
By Robert Frost

My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree

Toward heaven still,
And there's a barrel that I didn't fill
Beside it, and there may be two or three
Apples I didn't pick upon some bough.
But I am done with apple-picking now.
Essence of winter sleep is on the night,
The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.
I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight
I got from looking through a pane of glass
I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough
And held against the world of hoary grass.
It melted, and I let it fall and break.
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.
And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.

For I have had too much

Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it's like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.

Discussion

Losing jobs and businesses, Filipinos went back to planting and farming
either as a means of relaxing (like the so-called plantitos and plantitas) or as
alternative source of living. Whatever the reason in going back to farming, people
now are more appreciative to those who constantly works, and they become more
aware of the worker’s situations.

Just like how the two poets motivate themselves to write their opinion
through poems, people do express their opinion of workers and the working situation
but in other forms of writing. Writers during the early times write their impressions

22 | P a g e
and opinion in an artistic and creative way. Today, people write for practical usage,
often with the aid of the internet.

In a VUCA- volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, the ability to

comprehend the details of a certain situation, and to use this information for
decision-making and ease of going through certain situations that needs solutions
is a must.

The poem of Markham and Frost may precisely illustrate the work conditions
of both farmers during their time since farming is the main source of income those
days. However, it is no longer the same case at present. Farmers and farming use
complex strategies to get by. Farmers and other workers are now harnessing their
communication skills to cope up with either the demands of customers/end-users
and the demands of work environment itself.

Workers, even farmers, find that the ability to prepare materials that would
help them in selling their product and services and the ability to analyze situations
that may present opportunities are important skills.

The activities on the Review part is one of the ways of understanding and
managing a situation. The ability to analyze situations would enable you to go
through and be flexible for changes. What you did on the Review part is an example
of an analysis that used infographics called Venn diagram.

On any business or trade, communication skills are important to be able to

function well both during good times and problematic situations. First is knowing,
next is knowing what to do.

The following will be a great way to adjust to some tasks, practical problems and
situations:

1. Graphic organizers;
2. Infographics
3. Position or Official statements
4. Surveys which aids in analysis

An infographic is a form of visual communication. It is at-a-glance summary

of a topic that usually uses images, charts and very minimal texts.

According to Midori Nediger, (2020) “an Infographic can provide a quick

overview of a topic, explain a complex process, display research findings or survey
data , summarize a long report, and contrast multiple options and raise awareness
about an issue or cause.”

One could always use some Infographics format on many applications like
Canva, Piktochart Adobe spark and Visme. Moreover, conducting a survey now is
becoming progressively common practice to be able to understand how to come up

23 | P a g e
with a better decision and effective plan. On social media, a quick poll or survey
about various things is commonly used to be able to find out other people’s opinion.

On zapier.com (2015) Stephanie Briggs summarized making a survey on six quick

steps into:

6 Best Practices for Writing Survey Questions

1. Use Simple, Direct Language. Avoid using big words, complicated words,
and words that could have multiple meanings.
2. Be Specific in what you want to ask. Use exact responses on your choices of
response.
3. Break Down Big Ideas into Multiple Questions.
4. Avoid Leading Questions.
5. Ask One Thing per Question. Do not complicate questions. Ask one specific
data per question.
6. Use More Interval Questions.

In making a statement or most often a position regarding issues, remember the

rules: know your audience and anticipate their reactions to what you are going to say
and be specific in getting your message across.

The activities that follow are some practices used nowadays on a workplace.
Hone your skills on it.

Activities

Guided Practice 1: Breaking News

General Directions: Read the real-life situation given and then proceed to the
related activities
Situation:

Imagine that you are managing your family’s shop that sells a little of
everything. The business is significantly doing well, employing 30 clerks and earning
a minimum of PHP10,000 per day; but then the lockdown begun.

The local government announced the temporary allowed only those shops or
businesses which cater to basic necessities that produce and supply goods, food and
necessary supplies such as gas stations and health clinics. Your business, though
selling some goods used on hygiene, consumable food items and a bit of everyday
wear and school supplies must be checked by local authorities in order to gain permit
to operate under the circumstances. You need to immediately think of things that
must be done to stay relevant and continue this business.

24 | P a g e
What would you do as the manager?

Tick or check the box of what you probably do:

o Close shop or close your store if the LGU says so
o Find a way to operate or continue doing business even if you close your physical
shop temporarily if you were not given a permit
o Make an inventory of your stocks
o Bargain with the LGU
o Ask your employees to go find another job
o Lessen your employees
o When you are given a permit, keep your employees but lessen their salary and
working day

Now, of course, you must inform everyone involve or everybody who will get
affected by a closure or change of operations whichever you may be forced to decide on.
Check or tick who among this people you must talk to tell of the changes:
- Family
- Friend
- Neighbor
- Your father
- Your loya customers
- Psychiatrist
- Employees
- Trusted clerk

If you have answered correctly the exercise above, congratulations! Any possible
answer you have is a clear indication that you have taken responsibility to analyze
a situation.

Activity proper

Directions: On your paper, write the letter of the best way to do things.

1. How will you break the news to your family?

a. Gather them on a room and tell them to stop spending too much because you
might run out of cash
b. Gather them on a conference table to tell them that your business will go
bankrupt soon
c. Gather them together on an appointed time and part of your house and tell
them what is going on
d. Gather them together on an appointed time and part of your house and tell
them what is going on and ask their opinion and suggestions on what possibly
each of them must do on such situation
e. There is no need to tell them, they know how the store or shop operates, they
know what is going on, and they know what the current financial situation of
the store is.

25 | P a g e
2. How will you tell your employees that there may be a lay-off if the pandemic
restrictions continue?

a. “Everyone brace yourselves with this bad news. We are closing the shop Thank
you for your services. You may claim your last paycheck at the end of the day.”
b. Good morning! As you all know, our store is on the edge of closing up
temporarily because of the restrictions of the pandemic. We need to adjust
either by taking more day-offs to maintain social distancing and still keep the
job and the store open, suggest a better and safer way to comply with the
health protocols so the store could still operate or resign if you are having
difficulty. Does anyone have a suggestion?
c. Good morning everybody! So many had changed with this lockdown. Now, we
may have to close shop or temporarily close our store in case the local
government would not issue us a permit. But don’t you worry, we will find a
way so that we can still operate. I cannot let you lose your job that is
supporting your family as much as I also would not want to lose my business.
I want your cooperation now more than ever. We have to review our work
schedules, way of doing our tasks and handling our stocks and most of all,
may I ask everyone to honestly answer the survey that the HR will be sending
you later?
d. Good morning! Kindly look out for instructions on our store’s new normal
operations and set-up. Thank you for your cooperation. Work safely!

3. If you are going to make a survey to assess or know the details that would help
you on setting a new work set-up for your business, which of the following would
you include? (Tick all that applies)
-Name of employee
-Ages of employee
-Fast-moving items
-Slow-moving items
-Stocks allowed as necessity during pandemic
-Stocks not necessary for pandemic

-Vehicles or delivery trucks being used
-Positions and tasks of each employee
-Key people per department
-Problems solved before
-Problems on operations
-Cause of problems encountered
-Problems encountered during the pandemic

26 | P a g e
4. What changes would you probably take based on the current health protocols
being imposed and the opportunities or trends that you can take advantage of if
you are going to continue operations or continue selling? Write the first five (5)
items you must include and then, use the word/phrases listed below to express
your reasons for listing such items
ITEMS
o Online selling
o Text your customer
o Create a Facebook page
o Upload pictures at Instagram (IG)
o Advertise a super sale
o Look for the audit report on stocks
o Wear gloves and facemasks
o Install CCTV
o Require health checks before clients can shop

List of possible reasons:

On trends stock purchase
Target customers use it advertise
Convenience satisfy precautions
Product development just to know

Guided Practice 2: Simplifying information through survey.

Directions: One of the skills one must be able to possess is to gather enough data
for a decision making or to come up with new policies.
Survey your employees as to their address, age, years of service
and medical conditions. The objective of the survey is for your imagined
business to be able to shift your products and mode of operations with
regards to the trends or preferences of your target client and the
capabilities of your staff. Make the questions clear and short.
Example:
Item 1 : Age of employee
a) Please indicate your age: ____
b) On what age range do you belong?
18-21 22-27

Change stocksITEMS REASON

28-35 36-49
50-60 65 and up

particular job as additional tasks. Write the exact way you are going to
communicate to that employee. Indicate where and when you would conduct the
talk.

a situation? Briefly explain in one paragraph.

Why do you think making a survey, infographics and draft for stating information
are beneficial in communicating changes?

How does the writing of Position/Official Statement helped you realized to be careful
in using appropriate words to avoid negative feedback to people who are greatly

Discussion

On your previous activities on Week 7 module, you have explored the

possibilities of challenges to your family’s economic source like the planned business
on the example situation.

You think back on the situation of the family business exercises you did on
Week 7. From there it is evident that you have to transfer your selling or marketing
strategy on the social media platform to advertise and solicit orders. That makes
social media interaction very valuable and must be managed with ease so as not to
take up most of your time and to make every posts contribute to the income
generation you expect.

Listed are some workable tips in managing your social media account:

1. Create a clear and definite objective and campaign as much as possible.

A goal will help you on the direction of your campaigns and posts. It also
helps you determine what strategies you will avail on social media
marketing programs and how much would you be willing to spend for it.

Example : Increase brand awareness in FB.

- (This objective clearly spelled-out on which socmed or social media are you going to
focus on and what strategies you can avail on such platform to boost your posts
or engagement among netizens)
Use the following tips from https://blog.hootsuite.com/smart-social-media-goals.

 Conduct a social media audit as to what is working and on what

platform
 Decide what is important to post
 Choose your goal-setting framework like the SMART
 Build brand awareness through brand mentions (tagged or not), shares,
post reach, impressions, virality rate, amplification rate
 Manage brand reputation customer satisfaction score and social
sentiment towards your products or services

Always remember that in every post you make, your goal is to grow social media
or socmed followers or subscribers. That is why you have to target the right
audiences, strengthen engagement strategies for increased loyalty through customer
satisfaction and positive brand perception.

31 | P a g e
2. Organize Your Content (business2community.com)
“You can get as simple as a document or spreadsheet or create a mind
map to outline your efforts or even use something like Google Calendar to
organize shared content.”

Include what type of material you are going to post: quotations, pictures
of products, pitch statements, current transactions, interesting narratives.
Indicate the time of posting because there is an algorithm needed for example
on Instagram on which there is enough traffic that would boost your views and
interaction with prospect clients. Do not forget on which social media platform
you are going to post it. Sometimes this organizational chart is termed as
“campaign” so that it would mean that there is a definite goal that you are trying
to reach. To illustrate:

SOCMED PLAN
Month: December 1-31,2020/Holidays
Objective: To reach 1M views at the end of the month

3. Be transparent- when you are selling, follow the DTI rule to state the item
name, its market prize, your store’s contact information and location. Post legit
transaction process. If you are posting not as a business entity but just an
individual, do not share false news or unverified content and always cite the
original owner of a quote or post.

4. Follow ethical rules and conduct

Social media nowadays is filtering posts and contents that are filled with
gender biased, pornography and violence; but you must be the first to restrain or
check yourself in posting uncalled-for materials.

32 | P a g e
5. Make sure your posts are relevant but not to stir controversy – share only
what makes things better for your subscribers or the life of your social media
(socmed) friends. Protect your privacy and others too.

6. Make it simple for those who have low level skills and literacy on social media
and internet.

“When considering the content that will be presented to users with low
levels of skills and literacy, the designer should ensure it is relevant to
them and also immediately applicable to their surroundings.”

7. Address negative discussion not by quarrelling with the haters but trying to
draw-out the point of dissatisfaction and offer a workable solution. If all else
fails, there is a delete button you can turn to.

8. Welcome advocates of any cause that interests you or that your business is
related with so you also open a channel of serving your community and be
relevant to your clients.

9. Review and evaluate your performance. Consider what you did well, what
came as a surprise, and what you could do differently next time.

(from https://www.business2community.com/social-media/the-power-of-
organization-for-social-media-success-in-a-vuca-world-0394082)

However, there are things you must observe in communicating on Social

Media so as to avoid being trapped on “cancel mentality/campaigns”, being flagged
and reported. Messages or posts-whether spoken or visual- must be carefully
chosen. Avoid discrimination. Use gender-sensitive language. Be vigilant in making
your posts inclusive. Use language or term that embraces all people not just men-
approach inclusiveness. These are more terms to avoid:

1. Titles and gender-specific pronouns.

 Replace third-person pronouns with second-person pronouns:
NON-inclusive STATEMENT RECAST
He or she must clean up the You must clean up the
conference room at the end of conference room at the end of
each meeting. each meeting.

 Recast the sentence to omit the gender-specific pronoun/s:

NON-inclusive STATEMENT RECAST
The average student may end The average student may end
up spending too much of his up spending too much money
money on software. on software.

33 | P a g e
2. Spotlighting- the use of an adjective draws attention to a role adoption that
challenges a gender role. For example, “male nurse” or “career woman”
 Change to a better term

chairman: chair, chairperson

man-made: artificial, synthetic
manpower: workforce
foreman: supervisor, team leader

3. Diminutivisation – when roles and names are formed by adding lower-status

and/or affectionate suffixes to titles and names. For example, “actress” or
“waitress”.

 Replace third-person pronouns with indefinite article (a, an) or definite

article (the):

NON-inclusive STATEMENT RECAST

The manager or his assistant … The manager or an assistant …

4. Differential naming- a common practice where males are referred to by adults’

titles, while females may be referred to by pre-adult titles.
Mr Smith, the men from accounts and the girls from marketing want to see you.

5. Featurism
Featurism is where something such as appearance is focused on in women but
not in men. This trivializes and demeans the contribution of women.

Lastly, when developing campaigns and content, according to

https://sproutsocial.com/insights/brand-diversity-in-social-media ask
questions such as:

 Are we appropriating elements of a marginalized culture?

 Are we using insensitive language or phrases that have racist origins or
insensitive connotations?
 Are we amplifying the voice of someone who is considered racist or harmful to
the community?

34 | P a g e
Activities

Guided Practice 1
Directions: Identify the blunders or mistakes used on the following statement. Some
parts of the sentence is underlined to serve as a clue or hint. Write only
the letter of your answer.

1. Outgoing prime minister Kevin Rudd gave his farewell speech as leader of the
Australian Labor Party, telling his colleagues there were no hard feelings, even for
his enemies.
a. diminutivisation b. featurism c. differential naming

2. In her farewell speech, the Prime Minister (Gillard) wore a little black dress paired
with a structure collarless blazer that featured sleeves in olive green – a color that
stylists will tell you is good for her autumn coloring. Her glasses were simple but
stylish in graduated tones so as not to appear too harsh. Her hair was cut in a
style that suited her face and coloring. She wore statement stud earrings that
flashed stylishly from under her bob.
a. diminutivisation b. featurism c. differential naming

3. “That salesman is so funny”, Ben said pointing to the woman on the counter.
a. diminutivisation b. featurism c. differential naming

tripped on the open manhole”?
a. opening hatch b. hole c. person hole

5. The negro boy sat begging at the store front.

a. diminutivisation b. featurism c. differential naming

Guided Practice 2
Directions: Devise or make what is instructed on the following exercises that would
sharpen your judgment on how to better encourage engagement with
your subscribers or followers. Choose one activity that you find more
interesting to do.

1. Choose one quotation or bible passage that says something about your state of
mind or feelings right now. Then, layout it with a background picture that adds
meaning to the quotation. Save it as picture and posts it on your social media
account without any explanation. After posting it, take a screenshot of the
reactions of your followers and then, pass it as your output.

Assessment B: INCLUSIVE? or EXCLUSIVE?

Directions: Below are some campaigns and advertisements made by top companies
all over the world. Determine if the campaign or photo contributes to
inclusiveness on the internet and society in general. Write inclusive if
it does promote inclusiveness. Write exclusive if it’s not.

1. Recently, it came to Microsoft's attention that children with certain physical

disabilities or missing limbs were having difficulty playing video games with
traditional controllers. The company began working on an alternative
controller which included touchpads instead of buttons and bright colors for
the visually impaired. They also opened a channel of communication where
disabled people who still could not use the controller could write to them
requesting customizations.

2. Benefit – Kate Grant Brand Ambassador

In 2019, Benefit Cosmetics announced Northern Irish model Kate Grant as

their new brand ambassador. Kate Grant is the first model with down
syndrome. The photos of Kate Grant were shared all over the brand’s social
media.

3. If you grew up in the 1970s or 80s, you might remember the company's
famous "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" commercial. When filming the ad,
Coca-Cola young adults from all around the world to sing the jingle, "I'd Like
to Buy the World a Coke."

4. In 2016, Axe launched a commercial that argues that masculinity is about

being confident with your own identity rather than being a stereotypical buff
athlete.
The short commercial begins with a car pulling up on a street covered with
billboards of buff male models. As a car pulls up with a man in it, a narrator
exclaims, "Come on. A six-pack? Who needs a six-pack when you got the
nose?" At the end of the phrase, the man looks and smiles at the camera. The
narration expresses that masculinity is about expressing yourself, embracing
your passions, and being confident in who you are. The commercial goes on
to show images of all sorts of men finding their passions. It ends with the
narrator saying, "Who needs some other thing, when you've got your thing.
Now work on it."

Directions: Review your social media activities for the past month and
answer the following questions:

1. Was there a time that your post in social media is not as relevant as it is? What
would be the effect of such posts on you or your relationship with your followers
or subscribers?
2. If you are to correct that one particular mistake; how or what are you going to
post in reference to that?
3. Take a screenshot of your best posts these past few months that generated
positive feedback. What did you learn from the feedbacks?

Acknowledgment

The Schools Division of Zambales would like to express its heartfelt gratitude
to the following, who in one way or the other, have contributed to the successful
preparation, development, quality assurance, printing, and distribution of the
Quarter 2 Guided Learning Activity Kits (GLAKs) in all learning areas across grade
levels as a response to providing the learners with developmentally-appropriate,
contextualized and simplified learning resources with most essential learning
competencies (MELCs)-based activities anchored on the principles of guided learning
and explicit instruction:

First, the Learning Resources (LR) Development Team composed of the writers
and graphic artists for devoting much of their time and exhausting their best efforts
to produce these indispensable learning kits used for the implementation of learning
delivery modalities.

Second, the content editors, language reviewers, and layout evaluators

making up the Division Quality Assurance Team (DQAT) for having carefully
evaluated all GLAKs to ensure quality and compliance to DepEd standards;

Third, the Provincial Government of Zambales, for unceasingly extending its

financial assistance to augment the funds for the printing of these learning resources
for use by learners and parents at home;

Fourth, the teacher-advisers and subject teachers, in close coordination with

the school heads, for their weekly distribution and retrieval of the GLAKs and for
their frequent monitoring of the learners’ progress through various means; and

Finally, the parents and other home learning facilitators for giving the learners
the needed guidance and support for them to possibly accomplish the tasks and for
gradually helping them become independent learners.

To deliver learning continuity in this challenging circumstance would not be

possible without your collective effort and strong commitment to serving our
Zambaleño learners.

Again, our sincerest thanks!

The Management Team
