YAŞAR DOĞU

Yaşar Doğu was born in Samsun in 1913. His father was martyred in
the First World War. That's why his moved to his grandfather's house
with his mother. When he was 5 years old, his mother married
someone else and started living with his aunt.
He started wrestling at the age of 15 and became the most famous
wrestler in his village. He was go to the soldier in 1936 in Ankara and
joined the wrestling club there. His soldier ended in 1938 and later
continued to live in Ankara. Onni Helinen, who was the national team
coach at that time, saw his success in wrestling and was impressed.
The coach said, join him to the national team. He joined in 4 matches
in the European Championship the same year. He came in second
because he lost one of these matches. He won the Balkan
Championship in 1940 in Istanbul. He won the matches in Kahire and
İskenderiye in 1946. A year later he beat all his opponents in the
European Greco-Roman Championship. He joined in the London
Olympics in 1948 and became champion by beating 5 rivals again. He

national team in 1949. During this tour, he joined in 7 wrestling
matches and won them all. He went on a tour of Asia in 1950 and
become famous in the east thanks to the matches he won on this
tour. He beat all his rivals at the World Championship in 1951,
despite being shorter than his rivals.
He leave wrestling in 1952 and became a coach for the national
team. He suffered a heart attack in Sweden on December 15, 1955.
Although doctors recommend rest returned to Turkey and continued
to do coaching. He died on January 8, 1961, passed due to his second
heart attack in Ankara.
