Summary of Lebensborn:

Lebensborn (Fountain of Life) was a program initiated by the Nazi SS head, Heinrich Himmler,
with the goal of increasing the Aryan race population in the country. The program was formed
on the 12th of December 1935, 4 years before World War 2 broke out. In Nazi Germany, the
Aryan race were the people who are white, have blonde hair, blue eyes, and are tall, while not
possessing any Jewish blood. The program works through the use of a Nazi German SS
officers (Schutzstaffel) who were considered an Aryan or of Aryan descent, and a German or
any other women who were considered an Aryan or of Aryan descent. They were paired with
each other with the goal of creating an offspring which inherited the traits of an Aryan race.

These Aryan offspring were handed over to the hands of the government, the biological parents
had no rights to see or take care of the baby. And so, these babies were called Lebensborn
children. The Lebensborn were raised by the Nazi government, and they were taught
unconditional loyalty to the state. Each Lebensborn had no rights to look for their biological
parents, even when they had reached the age of consent.

After the end of World War 2 and the Nazi regime around year 1945, the Lebensborn children
suffered humiliation, bullying, rape, abuse and persecution in the country of Norway. On the
other hand some have found their biological parents while some were not able to find them.
There were approximately 20,000 Lebensborn children around the world.

Opinion/Solution:

Having taught the value of patriotism during the early stage of a person's life can either be good
or bad. It can be good, because you were taught how to love your country and fight for it even
though you are still young. You have instilled it within you that you will give up your life for the
sake of your country. On the other hand, as you grow up, you begin to become more curious of
what happens to things about this and that. You will begin to ask about lots of things, especially
where and from who you came from. The actions of the German Officers who were involved
with the program are not morally good. They knew that their lives were in danger since it was a
time of war that time wherein, they volunteered to mate with someone who is from the same
race, but they will not foster their own child. In addition, the consequences of their actions will
fall to the life of their child. Their child will grow without the love of a parent and since Nazi
Germany lost, the government will no longer support the Aryan children who were born during
the World War 2.

One solution that I can think about for now is for the government to make a day in
commemoration of the victims of the disaster. On November 1, 2005, the UN General Assembly
adopted a resolution designating the 27th of January as the annual International Day of
Commemoration in memory of the victims of the tragic event. Ever since this day, the world
remembers the victims of the disaster. The date itself is also a Remembrance Day on when the
Soviet troops, on January 27, 1945, liberated the biggest Nazi concentration camp in Poland.
However, commemorating the victims is not enough. We must not forget the lessons of the past
atrocities and learn to read the current events through the prism of these lessons.
