Op Art Using

Line and Value

Line and Value
are “Elements of Art”.
That means we use
them to make art.
The elements of art are:
line, shape, color, value, texture, form and space
Lines
Lines that change direction can
give the illusion that the surface
of something changes.
Describe how the lines are different in each flag.
When lines are curved they create the
illusion that they are either moving towards
or away from you.

Look carefully at the flag.

Can you tell which way it’s moving?
Is it moving towards you or away from you in
the first section (with stars)?

Could it be moving either way?

This is called ambiguous space.
Ambiguous means that something is open to
more than one interpretation or meaning.
The “Waving Flag” op art lesson uses lines
and value to create the illusion of space in an
ambiguous way.
Value
When the colors get lighter or
darker it can give the illusion of
space and depth.
Where does the value get the lightest?
The value is the lightest in the center of each
section to give the illusion that the surface is
curved and that light is hitting it more
in the center.
How does value show space and depth
in these pictures?

Where is the value the lightest and darkest?

A light value can also indicate that something is far
away. The value is lighter because we are looking
through more of the earth’s atmosphere.
This also makes the colors look faded.
Value can also create space or depth in
geometric shapes because our eyes and
brains apply the same rules to the shapes as
they do the landscapes.
In this geometric design, our brains also
notice the way the corners line up to form
converging lines.
Lines
Converging lines can create the
illusion of depth.
Converging lines are found when parallel lines
get farther away from us and appear to
converge, or come together,
at the vanishing point.
The lines are not really there, just the
illusion of lines.
The “Negative Positive Value Scale”
op art lesson uses value to create the illusion
of space.
A value scale is a series of values that get
progressively lighter or darker.

How is this like the notes of a music scale?

Reversing the order of the value scale in
each section adds some ambiguity.
These 3 op art lessons will give you a chance
to try out some optical illusions.
