How to Prepare Your Workplace for Installing EV

Charging Stations

India is undergoing a significant shift towards electric vehicles (EVs). The government has set
an ambitious goal for 2030: 30% electric mobility for private cars, 70% for commercial vehicles,
and 80% for 2- and 3-wheelers. This aligns with ever-growing public interest in embracing
sustainable transportation to combat air pollution and address climate change.

As EV adoption continues to surge, the demand for ubiquitous charging infrastructure is rising
accordingly. Lack of home charging infrastructure forces many EV users to make time-
consuming visits to public charging stations, but this is not a practical option for people who
have long daily commutes. Workplace EV charging offers a much-needed solution: it not only
eliminates the hassle of searching for charging stations, but also spares EV users from long
wait times while their vehicles charge. Moreover, installing this infrastructure constitutes a
powerful workplace sustainability initiative; it enhances a business's reputation as an eco-
conscious employer, client, and vendor, thereby bolstering its overall appeal and positive
impact.

Assess Your Workplace's EV Charging Needs

Before you commit to installing workplace EV charging stations, take some time to get a full
understanding of your workforce's needs and demands. To initiate this process, consider taking
a survey. Questions can include:

1. How long is your commute to work?

2. Do you own, or are you willing to install, an EV charger at home?
3. Does your job involve traveling throughout the work day?
4. Do you have, or plan to get, an electric or hybrid vehicle?
5. How much would you be willing to pay for charging?
6. If you experience range anxiety, would chargers in the office parking lot alleviate it?
7. Would you make use of office charging stations?
Determine Optimal Charging Setup

Your workplace charging station’s placement and setup are essential to its success. Before
installing an EV charging station, make sure you take these steps:

● Use clear EV signage in parking lots

● Optimize space by using wall or ceiling mounts
● Invest in security measures, such as proper lighting, to safeguard expensive electric
vehicle supply equipment (EVSE)
● Design for accessibility, including by providing access aisles for EV users with
disabilities
● Place EVSE near power sources to minimize the need for electrical construction
● Leverage state zoning regulations to cooperate with commercial and corporate park
owners
Infrastructure Upgrades and Electrical Capacity
As per the Indian government’s CEA safety regulations, prepping a site and installing EV
charging stations requires the following measures:

1. Identify a suitable location, considering accessibility and proximity to the office

2. Calculate the expected electrical load, based on charger types and power ratings
3. Engage qualified and licensed electricians and electrical supervisors to design the
electrical system in compliance with local building codes
4. Collaborate with experts to create a detailed plan for electrical design, including wiring
diagrams and safety measures
5. Coordinate power supply requirements with local utility providers
6. Obtain all necessary permits and approvals from local authorities
7. Install transformers if needed, ensuring proper sizing and setup
8. Install a power distribution panel, complying with safety guidelines
9. Install charging equipment following manufacturer guidelines and regulations
10. Set up metering and billing systems for accurate usage measurements

To ensure a smooth, safe, and correctly executed installation process, it's imperative to enlist
skilled electricians who are well-versed in current electrical codes and regulations and equipped
with the necessary tools. Faulty wiring could lead to fires, so always prioritize compliance with
CEA safety provisions as you plan, design, and set up your EV charging station.

Selecting the Right EV Charging Equipment

Before installing workplace EV charging stations, assess which EV charger is best for your
needs. There are three different kinds of EV charging station, with different technical
specifications and capabilities, available in India:

Level 1
Technical specifications:
● Uses Type 1 and Bharat AC-001 connectors
● Plugs into standard wall outlets; no extra setup required

● 8 hours or more

Smart charging:
● Limited

Level 2
Technical specifications:
● Uses Type 1, Type 2, GB/T, and Bharat AC-001 connectors
● Requires installation by a qualified electrician

Charging time:
● 4-6 hours

Compatibility:
● Mainly for 4-wheelers; may not suit 2- or 3-wheelers

Smart charging:
● Available

Level 3
Technical specifications:
● Uses Type 2, CHAdeMO, CCS1, and CCS2 connectors

Charging time:
● 1-3 hours

Compatibility:
● Exclusively for 4-wheelers; not suitable for 2- or 3-wheelers
