UNIT II

I. AUDITORY (in music) - an art of sound that expresses ideas and emotions in the significant form through the different
elements.

Rhythm - movement, fluctuation, or variation marked by the regular recurrence or natural flow of related elements.

Pitch – highness or lowness of sound, consistent pattern of similar sounds.

Melody – rhythmic succession of single tones organized as an aesthetic whole.

Musical Notation – process of representing by a system or set of marks, figures, or characters used in music

Harmony – combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord

Timbre – perceived sound quality of musical tone which sets apart from other tones

II.KINESTHETIC (dance) – art that deals with body movement

Human body – center of performance activity, main medium in performing arts

Arrangement or pattern – movements or steps which enable the performers to perform in an organized manner.

Time and space – other elements are needed to complement the available and selected time and space

III.DRAMATICS (theatre) – narrative performed on a stage in front of an audience

Stage direction – instructions for movement, blocking, or positions

Narratology - narrative structure of piece

Scenic design – background or scene

UNIT III

Contemp Art – art of today, produced in 2nd half of 20th century and 21st century

- Dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects.


- Possible to transform elements from modern art into contemp art which forms the modern contemp
art.
In terms of art history, contemp art can be defined as art produce by artist of today

Modern Art - Art from the 1860s to the 1970s represents styles and philosophies of art, often characterized by a
departure from past traditions for experimentation.

Key difference between the 2

Period - Modern art, originating from the late 19th to mid-20th century, is characterized by innovative and
contemporary art, originating from current or past artistic practices.

Subject matter and style - Modern art rejects traditional forms and subjects, exploring new techniques, while
contemporary art often addresses social and political issues, often being more experimental in materials and methods.

Emphasis on Concept – modern art focuses on expression and emotion, Contemporary art prioritizes the concept and
idea behind the work, while also emphasizing the message or meaning of the work over its formal qualities.

Use of Multimedia and technology - Contemporary art blurs boundaries between art and technology, incorporating
multimedia and interactive elements, while traditional media like paint and sculpture are primarily used in modern art.

Ongoing Movement - Modern art is a fixed historical period, while contemporary art is an ongoing movement that
evolves and adapts to the current social and political climate.

Modern art vs Contemp Art

Neoclassical style - Classical art movements, inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, promote harmony, clarity, restraint,
universality, and idealism in the arts.

Modern art referred as “traditional”, Contemp art is “present” continuously in process and in flux
Neo-realist artists like Tabuena, Ocampo, Manansala, Oteyza, Estella, and Legaspi were active, post-WWII. Called
neorealist by critic Aguilar Cruz, portrayed societal issues and challenged the Neoclassic style, with Social Realists of the
1970s being heirs.

Contemporary art lacks a single characteristic and is characterized by the artist's ability to innovate and create modern
masterpieces.

SUBJECT – refers to what they are all about

Theme – what connects subject to their social milieu or its context

We note initial data with (in order) – Title, Artist, Medium, Dimension, year made.

Subject matter answers the question – what do we smell, see, hear, taste, or touch?

Subject and themes in contemporary art – Ecology, Identity, Spirituality, everyday life.
UNIT IV – NATIONAL ARTIST OF THE PHILIPPINES

National Artists in the Philippines Established in 1972 under Presidential Decree No. 1001 issued by then President
Ferdinand Marcos,

the National Artist Awards (NAA) remains to be the highest award-giving body in the Philippine art scene.

The award, awarded every 3 years, is a joint effort between the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the
Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The organization has established awards in various fields such as architecture, design, film, visual arts, literature, dance,
music, and theater.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. The award recognizes living Filipino artists who were Filipino citizens for the past ten years, and those who died after
1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time of their death.

2. Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of nationhood through the content and form of their works;

3. Artists who have made significant contributions to the creative expression or style of their respective generations.;

4. Artists who have produced a substantial body of work or consistently demonstrated excellence in their art form,
thereby enriching artistic expression or style.

5. Artists who gain prestigious recognition, awards, critical acclaim, reviews, and respect from peers within their artistic
discipline are considered broad-accepted.

SELECTION

1. Nominations are submitted to the National Artist Secretariat, where experts from various art fields convene for a First
Deliberation to create a shortlist of nominees.

2. The NCCA Commissioners and CCP Board of Trustees convene for a joint Second Deliberation to select the final
nominees.

3. The final nominees are announced by the President of the Philippines through a Presidential Proclamation.

HONORS & PRIVILEGES

1.The rank and title of National Artist, as proclaimed by the President of the Republic of the Philippines.

2.The insignia of a National Artist and a citation. HONORS & PRIVILEGES

3. A lifetime emolument and physical benefits such as:

a) A cash award of ₱100,000.00 (for living awardees) or ₱75,000.00 (for posthumous awardees to the legal heir/s) net of
taxes;

b) A life insurance coverage, monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits;

c) A state funeral and burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani;

d) A place of honor and recognition at cultural events.


UNIT V - GAMABA: GAWAD sa MANLILIKHA ng BAYAN (National Living Treasures Award)

Institutionalized through Republic Act No. 7355 in April of 1992.

The NCCA, through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Committee and an Ad Hoc Panel of Experts, conducts the search
for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others and
undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the genius of the
manlilikha ng bayan.

As envisioned under R.A. 7355, “Manlilikha ng Bayan” shall mean a citizen engaged in any traditional art uniquely
Filipino whose distinctive skills have reached such a high level of technical and artistic excellence and have been passed
on to and widely practiced by the present generation in his/her community with the same degree of technical and
artistic competence.
QUALIFICATIONS To become a “Manlilikha ng Bayan”, the candidate must possess the following qualifications:

1. He/she is an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines that has
preserved indigenous customs, beliefs, rituals and traditions and/or has syncretized whatever external elements that
have influenced it.

2. He/she must have engaged in a folk-art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty (50)
years.

3. He/she must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive
quality.

4. He/she must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in
the art as master and maker of works of extraordinary technical quality.

5. He/she must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art for
which the community is traditionally known.

A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate, but due to age or infirmity has left
him/her incapable of teaching further his/her craft, may still be recognized if:

1. He/she had created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her
art, thus achieving important contributions for its development.

2. He/she has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community’s artistic tradition.

3. He/she has passed on to the other members of the community skills in the folk art for which the community is
traditionally known.

4. His/her community has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft.

CONSIDERATIONS HONORS & PRIVILEGES

1.A Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee receives a specially designed gold medallion, an initial grant of P100,000 and P10,000
monthly stipend for life; sa MANLILIKHA ng BAYAN Recipients

2. In consonance with the provision of Republic Act No. 7355, which states that “the monetary grant may be increased
whenever circumstances so warrant,” the NCCA board approved an additional monthly personal allowance of P14,000
for the awardees; and sa MANLILIKHA ng BAYAN Recipients

3. A maximum cumulative amount of P750,000 medical and hospitalization benefits annually similar to that received by
the National Artists and funeral assistance/tribute fit for a National Living Treasure.
