PROBLEM 6. The tension member is composed of a 200x150x10mm thick angle connected using

2. The tensile capacity of the member based on yielding of Ag.

bolts as shown. The holes are 2mm larger
than the bolt diameter. The plate is A36 steel
with Fy = 248 MPa and Fu = 400 MPa. It is
required to determine the value of b so that
the net width along bolts 1-2-3-4 is equal to
the net width along bolts 1-2-4.

1. Determine the value of b.


2. What is the net area for tension.
3. Calculate the value of P so that the allowable tensile stress
on net area will not be exceeded.
