Staircases - Lobbies - Corridors
■ Definition
The purpose of a DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE SYSTEM is the protection of people and firefighting teams. Therefore design of
the project must be done according to regulations and validated by the empowered authorities.
The standards that determine the conditions of fire protection for the evacuation areas (staircases, lobbies and corridors)
according to the typology of the building are the following:

BUILDING TYPOLOGY SPANISH REGULATIONS EUROPEAN STANDARD

Housing and tertiary CTE DB SI 3 Part 5

EN 12101-6:2006

QTPA
QPA_P2A = 0.75 x 1.6 x 1 x 3600 = 4320 m3/h

Design recommendations according to
UNE EN 12101-6:2006 standard.
■ How to apply the UNE EN 12101-6:2006* standard.
1. Determine the USE of the BUILDING (residential housing, administrative, teaching, commercial, public
concurrency, public residential, hospital, parking, other tertiary or industrial uses).
2. Determine by means of the tables of the relevant fire regulations whether it is a PROTECTED, ESPE-
CIALLY PROTECTED evacuation element and whether an EMERGENCY LIFT is requested.
3. The CLASSIFICATION OF THE PRESSURIZATION SYSTEM shall be agreed with the EMPOWERED AU-
THORITIES.

SYSTEM CLASS DEFINITION

A For means of escape. Defend in place.

B For means of escape and firefighting.

C For means of escape by simultaneous evacuation.

D For means of escape. Sleeping risk.

E For means of escape by phased evacuation.

F Firefighting system and means of escape.

■ Design criteria for air supply

1. Each pressurized evacuation route must have its own independent air supply.
2. Depending on the height of evacuation [he]:
■ he ≤ 11m → One air supply location is enough.
■ he > 11m → Supply air every 3 floors
3. The supply air points should be located at a distance d ≥ 3 m from the exit doors.
4. Drive fans must have 2 stages : normal and enhanced.
5. In case there is only 1 way of evacuation, installation of a back-up fan is mandatory.
