Convergence and Consultation to Activate Hand Hygiene in Odisha
Tentative Date: October 5, 2023
Bhubaneshwar, Odisha
Background
Hand hygiene is widely known to prevent infectious diseases, improve health, and contribute
to society's well-being. One of the most effective ways to prevent and control diseases is to
wash hands with soap or sanitizer before meals, after defecation, and when outdoors. SDG
6.2 aims to ensure universal access to hand hygiene by 2030. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), handwashing reduces the spread of pathogens and prevents infectious
diseases. As a COVID-19 pandemic response, handwashing became a social norm, and
handwashing facilities were installed at several public places. Despite all these efforts, the
majority of Indian states lack designated handwashing areas, soap, and piped water. Odisha
has substantial potential for improving its hand hygiene status from the current status of
having the lowest percentage of households washing their hands before meals and after
defecation. The state government of Odisha places a high priority on water, sanitation, and
hygiene. A roadmap for hand hygiene for the State of Odisha with actionable points for
government departments, institutions, communities, and others is essential to improving
hand hygiene facilities and making them accessible to all.
As part of its efforts to achieve this vision, the Planning & Convergence Department,
Government of Odisha, in collaboration with UNICEF and Mu Gamma, aims to lead Odisha
towards achieving SDG 6.2 by 2030 by coordinating and implementing a comprehensive and
sustainable hand hygiene roadmap. The Stakeholder Consultation workshop will be held on
October 5, 2023, with the following objectives;
Objectives:
> To facilitate a collaborative platform for key stakeholders from government departments,
institutions, communities, and partners to contribute towards the comprehensive hand
hygiene roadmap with actionable points emphasizing the long-term sustainability of
hand hygiene initiatives for Odisha State.
% To disseminate the draft sector-wise road maps developed for initiating
recommendations and a clear implementation plan for the government departments,
institutions, and communities to implement and maintain effective hand hygiene
practices in the state.
