First Star Kent State Academy Accepting Applications for September Start of 2023-2024
Term

(KENT, OHIO) Sept. 07, 2023 - First Star Kent State Academy is now accepting

applications for the September start of its free college access program for Northeast Ohio foster

youth.

The comprehensive programming teaches life skills, academic support and adult

mentorship to up to 30 students every school year. Students gain access to career exploration

resources, cultural activities, field trips, service learning and other experiences that prepare

them to find success in higher education and adulthood.

Eligible students are currently enrolled in 8th, 9th or 10th grade and are currently in

foster care in one of 10 Ohio counties. Students should expect to commit to monthly, Saturday

meetings during the school year and a four-week virtual summer session.

Kent State is one of 11 universities in the nation and the only Ohio university that

partners with First Star to facilitate the long-term college readiness program for high school

students in foster care.

The partnership closely aligns with Kent State’s mission to transform lives by providing

of discovery, learning and creative expression.
