Toxic Effects of Cetrimonium Chloride

Introduction

Cetrimonium Bromide and Cetrimonium Chloride are quaternary am- monium salts used

as cosmetic biocides, antistatic agents, surfactant- cleansing agents, surfactant-emulsifying

agents, and surfactant-suspend- ing agents in cosmetic products. Steartrimonium Chloride is

also a quaternary ammonium salt that has been used as an antistatic agent and surfactant.

 Effect of the Cetrimonium Chloride on human health

3

"Cetrimonium chloride, cetrimonium bromide, and steartrimonium chloride are

quaternary ammonium compounds that are used in a variety of cosmetic and

industrial products, such as shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, and

disinfectants"

"In 1997, the International Journal of Toxicology published a report that evaluated

the safety of these compounds based on animal and human studies."The report

identified the no-observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for cetrimonium chloride,

cetrimonium bromide, and steartrimonium chloride in rats to be 100 mg/kg/day.

The lowest-observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) was 200 mg/kg/day. The

NOAEL and LOAEL for humans are not known, but the report concluded that the

human NOAEL is likely to be higher than 100 mg/kg/day." "The report also

evaluated the potential for these compounds to cause skin irritation and

sensitization. The report concluded that cetrimonium chloride, cetrimonium

bromide, and steartrimonium chloride are mild skin irritants. However, they are not

considered to be sensitizers, which means that they are unlikely to cause allergic

reactions."

The toxic effects of the chemical are

4

•Skin irritation: Cetrimonium chloride can

cause skin irritation, especially in people with

sensitive skin. Symptoms of skin irritation can

include redness, itching, and burning.

•Eye irritation: Cetrimonium chloride can also cause eye

irritation. Symptoms of eye irritation can include redness,

tearing, and burning.

•Allergic reactions: Some people may be allergic to cetrimonium chloride.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, itching, swelling, and difficulty

breathing."

In rare cases, cetrimonium chloride can cause more serious side effects, such as:

•Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a

type of eczema that can be caused by exposure

to an irritant or allergen. Symptoms of contact

dermatitis can include redness, itching, and

blisters.
5

•Anaphylaxis: Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that

can be fatal. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include hives,

swelling, difficulty breathing, and shock.

Effect of the Cetrimonium Chloride on Animals

"cetrimonium chloride is moderately toxic to rats when ingested and severely

irritating to rabbit skin and eyes at 5% concentration."

Effect of the Cetrimonium Chloride on Environment

•Cetrimonium Chloride is a toxic substance that is harmful to aquatic life. It is also

persistent in the environment"

is a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) that is commonly used in personal

care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, and lotions, as well as in cleaning

products and disinfectants. QACs are known to be toxic to aquatic life, and

cetrimonium chloride is no exception.

•When cetrimonium chloride is released into the environment, it can accumulate in

water and sediment. It is also resistant to biodegradation, meaning that it can persist

in the environment for long periods of time.

6

•Cetremonium chloride can have a number of toxic effects on aquatic life. It can

damage fish gills, disrupt reproduction, and even cause death. Cetrimonium

chloride can also be toxic to other aquatic organisms, such as invertebrates and

algae.
