Foundation Design Problems For G4-CE

1. A Building is to be constructed over a site that has the soil stratification shown in Fig1 :
Using the data given below, design rectangular footing:
 Determine the area of a rectangular footing that can safely transfer the load from the superstructure
without shear failure, i.e. bearing capacity failure.
 Determine the depth of the footing and provide the necessary reinforcements and show the
reinforcement details/sketches.
 Check the requirement for Development length, Embedment Length for Column Reinforcement, and
bearing stress.

Use the following data:-

 The load from the superstructure; DL =2000KN, LL=500 Mx=1000Kn.m, & My = 10 Kn.m.
 The footing is to be placed at a depth of 1.5 m below the ground surface.
 Assume the foundation to be a flexible foundation.
 Ground water table exists at ground surface.
 Use concrete C-30 and steel S-400.
 Column size: 35 cm by 50cm with 8Φ20
 Use Hansen’s Bearing Capacity equation. Use F.S= 2.
 Design method:-Limit state design method and class I work

2: (Combined footing)

Design the combined footing shown in Fig.2 below having property line restriction at C1 if the column loads
from the superstructure are as follows:

Table 1:

Axial Mx
Column size load(KN) (KN.m) My(KN.m)

C1 40cmx40cm 500 0 0

C2 35cmx35cm 1600 0 0

Use concrete C-30, steel S-300 & qall = 300KPa

Design method:-Limit state design method and class I work

3: (Combined footing)

Design a rectangular combined footing shown in Fig.3 below for the loading conditions shown in table 2:

Use concrete C-30 and steel S-300

Soil Data: Allowable soil pressure, qall = 140KPa

Design method:-Limit state design method and class I work

Table 2:

Column size Axial load(KN) M (KN.m)

C1 40cmx40cm with 4Φ20 600 100

C2 50cmx50cm with 8Φ20 1000 0

C3 40cmx40cm with 4Φ20 700 0
