PRINTING YOUR PDF PATTERN
For a full tutorial on printing and Sport Short Print at Home.pdf
assembling PDF patterns visit:
fridaypatterncompany.com/pages/
printing-and-assembling-pdf-patterns
Your PDF pattern can be printed on letter
sized (8.5 x 11 in) or A4 paper. When you
print, make sure you select “Actual Size”
or scale to 100%. Do not select “scale to
fit”. You may want to print page 1 first and
double check the 2”x 2” test square before
printing the rest of your pattern. If your
pattern isn’t printing centered on the page,
change the orientation to “Auto portrait/
landscape”. Once printed, piece your
pattern together by putting the pages in
numerical order and matching up the gray
diamonds on the pages.

PRINTING LAYERS
Your PDF pattern file is layered so you can print out just the sizes that you want. To view
the layers you need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader (it is free).

To print the pattern and select layers:

• Download the pattern and open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
• Click the icon that looks like 3 squares falling from the sky to view layers.
• Uncheck the sizes that you don’t want to print. Be sure to leave the “All Sizes” layer
visible.

FIT NOTES
The Sport Shorts have an easy fit. The most important measurement to consider when
selecting a size is your hips. The elastic waistband with a drawstring makes the fit through
the waist flexible and comfortable.

YARDAGE REQUIREMENTS
You may need to purchase extra yardage if
your fabric has a heavy nap, is directional,
striped, or has an obvious repeat.

The yardage requirements are broken up CONTRASTING

between 'Main' and 'Contrasting' fabric. FABRIC
The main fabric is the body of the shorts
and the contrasting is the waistband and MAIN
binding. FABRIC

SUGGESTED ELASTIC LENGTHS

Below are suggested elastic lengths for the Sport Short waistband. It includes an extra inch
for overlapping the ends of the elastic when it is joined in a loop. You can also disregard
these suggested lengths, and pull elastic around your body to find the exact length that is
right for you! Make sure to add an inch so that it isn’t too tight when you join it in a loop.

DETAILED SEWING STEPS

1. You have 4 Shorts Binding (E) pieces that

will be sewn into 2 strips of binding. With right
sides together (RST), and points at a 3/8"[1cm]
overlap, sew two Shorts Binding (E) pieces
together along diagonal edge. Press the seam
open and cut off excess seam allowance.

J
Repeat to make a second binding piece.

2. With RST, sew Drawstring (H) pieces together at short end. Press seam open.

3. Fold Pocket Binding (D) in half lengthwise,

wrong sides together, and press. Fold the
raw edges in so that they meet at the crease
you made in the last step, press. Repeat this
process with Shorts Binding (E) and Drawstring
(H) pieces. If you have a bias tape maker you
can use it in this step to expedite the process!

4. Open up your drawstring and tuck the ends inward. Fold it in half again along the pressed lines
and press. Edgestitch down your drawstring and across the ends. Backstitch.

5. Finish outer edge of Pocket (C). You can use

your preferred seam finish here. A serged or zig
zag finish works great! Repeat on both pockets.

6. Pin Pocket Binding (D) to Front (A) along

diagonal pocket edge. The folded edges of the
binding are wrapped around the raw edge of
Front (A) and matched up on either side of the
fabric. Edgestitch binding in place, sewing with
the right side of your project facing up. Repeat
on both sides.

7. With right side of Pocket (C) and Front (A) facing up, match notches and pin Pocket (C) in place.
Baste in place. Repeat on both sides.

8. With wrong side facing up, pin Pocket (C)

to Front (A) around curved edge. Edgestitch
around curved edge to secure in place. Repeat
on both sides.

9. With right sides together (RST), pin Front

(A)'s together at center front. Sew. Finish seam,
press to one side.

10. With RST, pin Back (B)'s together at center
back. Sew. Finish seam, press to one side.

11. With RST, pin Front (A) to Back (B) at

crotch seam. Sew. Finish seam, press
toward back.

12. Open shorts up. Pin Shorts Binding (E)

in place around raw edge of Front (A) and
Back (B). The folded edges of the binding are
wrapped around the raw edge of the shorts
and matched up on either side of the fabric.
Edgestitch binding in place, sewing with the
right side of your project facing up. Repeat on
both sides.

The SPORT SHORTS // © Friday Pattern Company // fridaypatterncompany.com 16

13. Pin Front (A) to Back (B) at sideseams by overlapping the binding. You can choose to put front
or back on top in this step. The binding should overlap, with one binding section on top of the
other. Stitch from the waist of your shorts down to the circle mark. You are sewing on top of the
seam you made when you sewed your binding on. When you get to the circle mark backstitch, then
pivot, sew across binding, and then edgestitch up the other side starting with a backstitch. Repeat
on both sides.

14. Follow your sewing machine's instructions to sew buttonholes on Waistband Front (F).

15. With RST, sew Waistband Front (F) to Waistband Back (G) by joining the short sides together on
either end. Press seams open.

16. Fold your waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press.

The SPORT SHORTS // © Friday Pattern Company // fridaypatterncompany.com 17

17. With RST (right side here is the side with the buttonholes!), pin the waistband to your shorts
at the waist seam. Match the notches at center front and back. The side seam on the waistband
should fall in the middle of the side seam binding. Sew around waist leaving a 2"[5cm] opening.

2” (5 cm)
Opening

18. Grab your length of waistband elastic and attach a safety pin to the end. Feed the elastic into
the waistband. Inch the elastic through the waistband until it comes out the other side.

19. Make sure elastic hasn't gotten twisted in

the last step. Overlap the ends of the elastic
1/2"[1.3cm] and zig zag stitch them together to
create a loop.

Close 2” (5 cm)
opening

20. Sew the 2"[5cm] opening left in the waist

seam shut.

21. Finish the waist seam. You can use your

preferred seam finish method here. A zig zag
stitch or serged finish works great!

22. Stretch out the waistband a few times to distribute elastic evenly. Place pins around the
waistband to hold the elastic in place while you sew. Press the waistband away from the shorts, and
the seam allowance towards the shorts.

23. Topstitch elastic 1/4"[.6cm] from top edge

of waistband. Sew slowly, pulling the elastic flat
as you sew. Repeat 1/4"[.6cm] from lower edge
of waistband.

24. Feed drawstring through buttonholes

and around waist. OPTIONAL: Tie ends of
drawstring in knots.

Trim any loose threads and throw on those Sport Shorts! Congrats on sewing a new pair of shorts!
