The Genetics of Refractive Disorders
The Genetics of Refractive Disorders
Studies on familial populations have found common recurrence risks (λs) of refractive
errors between siblings ranging from 2 to 5.61 for myopia and 1.58 to 4.87 for hyperopia. More
extreme refractive errors show even larger familial clusters than mild ones. Additionally,
children of myopic parents tend to have longer eyes and are more likely to develop myopia in
childhood and adolescence.
A strong familial influence on the refractive phenotype (as evidenced by high heritability
and strong family aggregation) exists in populations with different underlying distributions of
refractive error. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that environmental influences
can lead to regional and ethnic differences in refraction distributions, but that variation within
populations is primarily due to genetic factors.
