ABSTRACT

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING E-COMMERCE FOR THE ABM LEARNERS

OF MABILAO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN RELATION TO THEIR FUTURE

CAREER

This research focused on the effectiveness of using E-Commerce for the

ABM Learners of Mabilao National High School in relation to their future career

using a quantitative type of research, particularly the evaluation approach

conducted. After obtaining conduct prior to the distribution of the survey

questionnaire. A total of 27 ABM learners at Mabilao National High School

become respondents of the study. The study’s respondents were 25 learners in

all and a survey questionnaire was used to gather the data. Interviewers were

conducted from February 2023 - May 2023.

Findings revealed that almost half of the respondents have an age of 17

years old with a percentage of 45.5% and a frequency of 25. Very few of the

respondents have an age of 19 years old and 20 years old with a frequency of 1.

Most of the respondents were female with a percentage of 87.3% and a

frequency of 48. Few of the respondents were male with a percentage of 12.7%

and a frequency of 7. A great majority of the respondents were from the Grade

11 with a percentage of 56.4% and a frequency of 31. Almost half of the

respondents were from the Grade 12 with a percentage of 43.6% and a

frequency of 24. Half of the respondents were interested in taking accounting as

their college course with a percentage of 50.9% and frequency of 28. Few of the

respondents chose business management as their college course with a

iii
percentage of 14.5% and frequency of 8. All of the respondents were interested

in selling goods and rendering device online with a percentage of 100% and a

frequency of 55. Many of the respondents selected Facebook as an effective

social media platform for business with a percentage of 27.9% percent and a

frequency of 46. Very few of the respondents selected Setting up/creating your

own website as an effective social media platform for business with a percentage

of 9.7% and a frequency of 16. "It is the preferred method of shopping because it

saves customer's time and effort" got the highest value with an average weighted

mean of 3.62 and a descriptive interpretation of Strongly Agree. "You will save

more money because of its lower operational expenses" got the lowest value with

an average weighted mean of 3.18 and a descriptive interpretation of Agree.

"You need to have a stable internet connection for you to manage an online

storefront" got the highest value with an average weighted mean of 3.71 and a

descriptive interpretation of Strongly Agree. "Lack of in-store engagement with

customers" got the lowest value with an average weighted mean of 3.18 and a

descriptive interpretation of Agree. "Gaining profit" got the highest value with an

average weighted mean of 3.53 and a descriptive interpretation of Extremely

Effective. "No reach limitations" got the lowest value with an average weighted

mean of 2.85 and a descriptive interpretation of Very Effective.

As a result, it is concluded that in general Grade 11 and Grade 12 ABM

learners at Mabilao National High School, almost half of the respondents were 17

years old, most of the respondents were female, and a great majority of the

respondents were from the Grade 11. Half of the respondents in ABM learners

iv
were interested in taking Accounting as their course in college. All of the

respondents in ABM learners are interested in selling or rendering their services

online and many of them selected Facebook as an effective social media

platform for business. “It is the preferred method of shopping because it saves

customers time and effort" got the highest value as the positive effect/advantage

of e-commerce and "You need to have a stable internet connection for you to

manage an online storefront" got the highest value negative effect/disadvantage

of e-commerce. "Gaining profit" got the highest value rating on the effectiveness

of using e-commerce for business.

Therefore, the study recommended that with respect ABM learners who

have experience in using different social media platforms such as Facebook and

Shopee so they can become more knowledgeable and better equipped to enter

the E-commerce field. Learners should evaluate the pros and cons of using E-

commerce as a result of having a successful business in the future. Consumers

are recommended to use E-commerce as their shopping method since it saves

more time, money, and effort instead of going to a physical store.

Wantrepreneurs and business owners are recommended to use E-commerce as

their method for selling goods and rendering services because of its great

benefits. To future researchers, this study is recommended to them as their

reference material or guide for those who will conduct research that is related to

this study.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem,

hypothesis, scope and delimitation, conceptual framework, the significance of the

study, and the definition of terms.

Background of the Study

Today, an enormous amount of business is done over the Internet (Devin

Johnson, 2020). It was stated in one of the articles published by the International

Trade Administration (2021) that the Covid-19 pandemic has raised the demand

for e-commerce in the Philippines. The worldwide epidemic fueled e-commerce

to become an indispensable part of the global retail framework and an innovative

solution for businesses.

Arreola (2020) said that the pandemic has had a tremendous impact on

economies and individuals. On March 2020, when the World Health Organization

(WHO) declared that COVID-19 was a global pandemic, the Philippine national

government through its Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious

Diseases outlined different quarantine measures and implemented several health

and safety protocols to mitigate the impact of the virus (Talabis, et al., 2021). Due

to that, business owners closed their physical stores temporarily. To continue

their businesses, they shifted to e-commerce and used its different tools and/or

platforms to build an online store. Also, as face-to-face meetings or interactions

1
were restricted, consumers relied on the use of technology and did online

buying or purchasing to acquire their needs (Lopez et al., 2022)

The pandemic has heightened several kinds of uncertainty and caused

social and economic crises, but one trend has become clear; it has vastly

accelerated digital adoption (Totolo, et al., 2020). Moreover, one of the articles

published by the International Trade Administration (2021) stated that the

growing middle class, increased consumer spending, and a youthful, lively, tech-

savvy populace all contributed to the expansion of e-commerce. E-commerce or

Electronic commerce simply refers to the selling and purchasing of goods and

rendering of services online or via the internet (Zande, J. V., 2020).

As lockdowns became the new normal, businesses and consumers

increasingly “went digital”, providing and purchasing more goods and services

online, raising e-commerce (Andrey Popov, 2021). E-commerce became a huge

deal in the world of business for its countless advantages for businesses and

consumers. As reported in an article on Amazon. In (2021), selling or rendering

services online has helped several businesses to avoid bankruptcy, be more

profitable, and grow successfully. Additionally, like any other business strategy,

there are many benefits of e-commerce that can help businesses to excel.

As ABM students, the researchers decided to choose this study because it

is aligned with their strand and they wanted to acquire more knowledge and

understanding about their chosen field. It may be also relevant to them if they will

conduct again a business-related study in the future. This research will provide

them with data and information in supporting facts, gathering pieces of evidence

2
for theories, and generating new and creative concepts. Furthermore, this

study about the effectiveness of using e-commerce for ABM Learners in relation

to their future careers will also serve as a guide to the researchers as they make

decisions for their future.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using electronic

commerce for ABM learners in the Mabilao National High School in relation to

their future careers. Specifically, the research question was used to guide the

researchers in the collection of data:

1. What is the profile of the respondents as to:

A. Age;

B. Gender; and

C. Grade Level

2. What type of ABM-related College courses are you interested in taking?

 Accounting Courses

 Business Courses

 Management Courses

2.2 Would you be interested in selling your goods or rendering your services

online knowing that many entrepreneurs and sellers were using social media as

their marketing tools if you intend to start a business in the future?

3
3.1 What are the possible effects of selling your goods or rendering your services

online?

3.2 How will you rate the effectiveness of using e-commerce in your future

business?

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework used in this study is the Input-Process-

Output (IPO) model. It includes the information that is required for this study. As

shown in Figure 1, the input consists of a statement of the problem of the study

for identifying the problems that needed to answer. For the process, researchers

used evaluation research to conduct the study. Survey questionnaires were

employed as the main instrument to gather the data needed in this study. For

output, it determines the effectiveness of using e-commerce for the ABM learners

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related studies and literature from both local

and foreign sources. The significant information that is related to the current

study is indicated in this chapter. The researchers' findings focus on the

effectiveness of using e-commerce in relation to the ABM Learners' future

careers.

FOREIGN STUDIES

The use of technology and the internet had a big impact on the e-

commerce industry. Amidst the pandemic, people rely on the use of digital

devices such as phones, computers, tablets, etc, because they were prevented

from going out. The business owners and sellers were not allowed to market their

products using traditional stores and the people were limited in doing activities

they enjoy such as shopping. For businesses to operate and be profitable, and

for consumers to acquire their needs, they utilized e-commerce. (Oxford

Business Group, 2021)

10
According to Good, A., 2017, e-commerce is the term used to describe

doing business through the internet. It is the secret tool to a successful business

because it plays a significant role in every company or business that sells things

in the current world. Many individuals turned to e-commerce for its more

convenient means of shopping and conducting business.

The updated work of Factory (2021) states that with the growing sector of

e-commerce, practically every business owner wants to establish an online store

where they can showcase their products and services. They all have the same

goal in mind—to have a wide base of customers and perform better. E-

commerce benefits businesses in terms of promoting their products easily,

reducing their costs, reaching new customers, and having more opportunities to

sell. Similarly, e-commerce has many advantages to consumers. Aside from it is

favorable to them since they do not need to go outside to purchase the items

they want, it is convenient to them because they will save more time and money,

avoid parking hassles and long lines (HRCCU, 2021).

The effects of using e-commerce are already being seen in every aspect

of an enterprise. However, on the contrary of its advantages, e-commerce is

done over the internet and according to Gangeshwer, D.K., 2013, in Internet

communication, there is no real face-to-face interaction. Internet marketing may

be also less ideal for certain products, such as those that require a physical

inspection or those that depend largely on the development of personal

11
relationships between buyers and sellers. Additionally, online marketing does not

permit potential customers to touch, smell, taste, or "try on" the items.

To conclude this part of the study, the e-commerce industry is still

expanding. Because of the increasing number of people who are using the

Internet, it is becoming more popular. (Manuela Ingaldi & Robert Ulewicz, 2019)

E-commerce may have a lot of benefits to individuals, however it also has its

downfalls which could affect the performance of the effectiveness of using e-

commerce. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of selling or buying

goods and rendering services online will give individuals knowledge on how they

will benefit from it more.

LOCAL STUDIES

The pandemic that happened around the world transformed e-commerce

to become trendy nowadays. E-commerce or electronic commerce refers to the

buying and selling of goods or rendering of services electronically on the internet.

It can also refer to other online activities, such as auctions, ticketing, and

banking. Because we live in the age of modern technology, by simply surfing the

internet, people can buy their everyday needs or necessities and they can also

make use of online services. (Maro, M.M.G., 2022)

Using e-commerce both has advantages and disadvantages. In the study

of Lopez et al., 2022, Paperap (2019) said, “Selling online has the potential to

12
transform your business. As more consumers and businesses are adapting

buying and selling through online channels, the digital marketing sphere is

becoming more competitive.” Jacob Landis-Eigsti, 2019 also claimed that an

online storefront has some significant advantages over a physical site that can

pay off handsomely for a relatively small investment of time and money.

Moreover, even if you already have a physical store, having an online store can

help you market your brand and provide a secondary sales outlet that can help

you increase your profits. With a well-designed online store, you may significantly

enhance your sales operations, lower expenses, and sell more products each

transaction. Whether you have a local business, a retail shop, or sell courses,

there are multiple opportunities to gain customers through online marketing. In

addition, the effective use of e-commerce helps businesses scale, grow, and gain

a steady flow of customers.

Likewise, e-commerce is also helpful to consumers. In one of the

published research on Academia.edu, the study by Berdin et al., 2021, stated

that online shopping is now a trend all over the country. Because e-commerce is

convenient, accessible, easy-to-use, time-saving, and many more, it has become

very popular nowadays. In this study, according also to Lim et al., 2016, the

usability and easiness of online shopping make itself a trend among consumers,

especially Gen Z people. Moreover, the currency of online shopping made

business owners and sellers interested to focus on this area.

13
Although e-commerce has many advantages for both sellers and

consumers, it also has some disadvantages. For sellers, they are required to

reveal all relevant information about an item in order to avoid the common

misunderstandings that occur in online environments. Moreover, the downside of

e-commerce includes poor or lack of internet access, security and fraud, website

costs, bogus buyers, and lack of in-store engagement with customers.

Furthermore, this setup may not be favorable to all consumers. The

disadvantages of it for consumers include delivery delays, lack of significant

discounts in online stores, the inability to touch and feel items, and online buying

frauds. (Lopez et al., 2022)

To sum it all up, e-commerce has made the life of individuals easier

because of the convenience and benefits that it brings. It may have some

downfalls, but the advantages of it are more numerous. It is utilized by millions of

people because of its wide range of products and services that saves time and

money. It is also used by businesses to generate income in an easy way.

Nevertheless, it can be concluded that e-commerce plays an important role in the

lives of every individual, especially business owners or sellers and consumers.

(Maro, M.M.G., 2022)

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter aims to introduce the quantitative research methodology. This

part of the research explains why the researchers chose the methodologies,

techniques, instruments, and strategies they used. They will enable the readers

to assess the overall validity and reliability critically of the study. This section

covers the research design, respondents of the study, sampling design, data

gathering instrument, data gathering procedures, and statistical techniques used

in the study.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers used a quantitative-evaluation type of

research. This type of research aims to evaluate the effects or outcomes of

practices, policies, or programs. It is utilized to determine the effectiveness of e-

commerce for ABM learners of the Mabilao National High School in relation to

their future career.

Sources of Data

The respondents of the study will be the ABM learners in the Mabilao

National High School. Using Slovin's formula, from the total of 27 ABM learners,

only 25 will participate in the study. They were selected based on random

sampling. Random sampling is a type of probability sampling in which the

15
researcher randomly selects a subset of respondents from a population. The

researchers randomly selected ABM Learners of the Mabilao National High

School as their respondents to collect data relevant to the study. Also, Slovin's

formula was used to obtain the study's exact sample size of the focused

population.

Slovin’s Formula:

n= Sample size

N= Total number of Respondents

e= Margin of error/0.05

n= 27
n= N n= 27 1.07
1+(n)(e)2 1+(27)(0.0025) n= 25.23
n= 27 n= 27
1+(27)(0.05)2 1+(0.07) n=25

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The researchers will use a survey questionnaire as the main instrument in

gathering the data that will be needed in the study. The questionnaire in this

study consists of variables related to the effectiveness of e-commerce for ABM

learners in the Mabilao National High School. The prepared questionnaire is

divided into two parts. The first part is the profile of the respondents and the

second part is the questions that are related to how the researchers determine

16
the effectiveness of e-commerce for ABM learners in relation to their future

career.

Tools for Data Analysis

The next step after dealing with the main instrument of the study—the

structured questionnaire, which is also made with the use of Statistical Package

for the Social Sciences (SPSS), the researchers will now describe the profile of

the respondents in terms of age, gender, and grade level. Also, the questions for

gathering data like, what type of ABM-related college courses are they interested

average weighted mean of 3.64 and has a descriptive interpretation of Strongly

Agree. However, "It offers 24/7 selling opportunities" got the lowest value with an

average weighted mean of 3.24 and a descriptive interpretation of Agree.

According to “Academia.edu” (2021), e-commerce has become very popular

nowadays because it is convenient, accessible, easy to use, time-saving, and

many more. Moreover, the study also of Hudson River Community Credit Union

24
(HRCCU) (2021), claimed that e-commerce has many advantages to consumers,

aside from it being favorable to them since they do not need to go outside to

purchase the items they want it is also convenient to them because they will save

more time and money, avoid parking hassles and long lines.

mean of 3.72 and a descriptive interpretation of Strongly Agree while "Lack of in-

store engagement with customers" got the lowest value with an average

weighted mean of 2.92 and has a descriptive interpretation of Agree. In the study

of Lopez et al. (2022), the downside of e-commerce includes poor or lack of

internet access, security and fraud, website costs, bogus buyers, and lack of in-

store engagement with customers. Furthermore, this setup may not be favorable

to all consumers. The disadvantages for consumers include delivery delays, lack

of significant discounts in online stores, the inability to touch and feel items, and

online buying frauds.

number of customers" got the highest value with an average weighted mean of

3.64 and a descriptive interpretation of Extremely Effective while "No reach

limitations" got the lowest value with an average weighted mean of 3.08 and a

descriptive interpretation of Very Effective. According to the updated work of

“Factory” (2021), e-commerce benefit businesses in terms of promoting their

products easily, reducing their costs, reaching new customers, and having more

opportunities to sell. Additionally, Landis-Eigsti (2019), claimed that having an

online store can help you market your brand and provide a secondary sales

outlet that can help you increase your profits. With a well-designed online store,

you may significantly enhance your sales operations, lower expenses, and sell

more products each transaction. In addition, whether you have a local business,

a retail shop, or sell courses, there are multiple opportunities to gain customers

through online marketing.

Conclusion of the Findings

27
From the discussion above, it can be concluded that the numerous

advantages or benefits of e-commerce can help ABM learners to be successful in

the field of business if they decided to build their own business in the future.

However, e-commerce has also some downsides which could affect the

effectiveness of its performance. Nevertheless, e-commerce plays an important

role in the lives of every individual, especially business owners or sellers and

consumers.

CHAPTER 5

commerce. "Gaining profit" got the highest value rating on the effectiveness of

using e-commerce for business.

Recommendations

Based on the findings presented, the researchers would like to

recommend the following:

1. This study recommends learners especially ABM learners have

experience in using different social media platforms such as Tiktok and

Shopee so they can become more knowledgeable and better equipped to

enter the E-commerce field.

2. Learners should evaluate the pros and cons of using E-commerce as a

result of having a successful business in the future.

31
3. Consumers are recommended to use E-commerce as their shopping

method since it saves more time, money, and effort instead of going to a

physical store.

4. Wantreprenuers and business owners are recommended to use E-

commerce as their method for selling goods and rendering services

because of its great benefits.

5. To future researchers, this study is recommended to them as their

reference material or guide for those who will conduct research that is

related to this study.
