11:53 PM

Morning peak period traffic volumes on the approaches to a toll bridge are given below. On the
average, a toll booth can handle on vehicle every 6 seconds. Prior to 7am, two booths are open
and there is no queue. At 7:30am, a third booth opens, and remains open until 8:30am.
a) Sketch the queuing diagram.
b) Use a queuing diagram to determine:
i. The time at which queuing begins and ends.
ii. The maximum number of vehicles in the queue and when the maximum queue
occurs.

Time period 15 min volume Cumulative volume

7:00-7:15 200 200
7:15-7:30 400 600
7:30-7:45 500 1100
7:45-8:00 550 1650

A popcorn seller is very popular. The mean arrival rate of patrons 5 persons / minute and the
service rate is 6 persons / minute. Modeling the system as an M/M/ 1 queuing system, determine
the following performance measures:
a) Average length of queue
b) Average number of people in the system
c) Average wait time in the system
d) Average wait time in the queue
e) Percentage of time the server is idle

Example 3.

11:54 PM

A sporting event begins 6pm. Tickets can only be purchased on the day of the event. Fans begin
to arrive at 6am. Between 6 and 10am they arrive at a rate of 100 persons per hour. Between
10am and 4pm fans arrive at the rate 200 persons per hour and from 4pm to 6pm fans arrive at
the rate of 120 persons per hour.
Tickets go on sale at noon. There are 10 ticket windows and each ticket sale takes on average 2
minutes.

Assume the system can be modeled as a deterministic queuing system.

a) What is the arrival rate during the four hours?

b) What is the arrival rate during the next six hours?
c) What is the arrival rate during the last two hours?
d) What is the service rate?
e) Sketch the system as a deterministic queuing system?
f) When does the queue begin to form?
g) When is the best time to arrive in terms of the shortest wait time?
h) What is the maximum length of the queue?
i) What is the maximum waiting time in the queue?
j) When does the queue dissipate?
