Transcripts on video related to Media Types

Today there are 5 different categories of twisted pair cables that you going to need to know for the
exam.

The difference between these is a maximum speed they can handle or without having any cross talk.
The numbers of these categories represent the tightness of a twist that are apply to the wires.

So, category 3 has a maximum speed of 10 Mbps and this is an old category that was used on old
10Base-T ethernet networks.

Category 5 has a maximum speed of 100 Mbps. These were used on 100Base-T and TX ethernet
networks.

Category 5e is enhanced version of category 5 and it has speed of over 1000 Mbps and these are
used to on 1000Base-t ethernet network.

Category 6 also has a maximum speed of 1000 Mbps and it also used on 1000Base-t ethernet
network but its more of a heavier duty cable compare to category 5e. and it is also used in 10G Base-
T networks which has a maximum speed of 10,000 Mbps but only for cable links of less than 100
meters.

And last there is a category 6a or augmented and this has a maximum speed of 10,000 Mbps and is
used on 10G Base-T networks and unlike category 6 this has a maximum length 100 meters.

UTP Cable
Unshielded twisted cable by default is most common type of cable used today. It consists of
four unshielded wires twisted around each other. The wires are twisted to prevent
electromagnetic interference or cross talk.
This type of cabling is mainly used to local area network.

STP Cable
Now shielded twisted pair cable is similar to unshielded twisted pair except that it has four
shield that covers the wires. This shielding adds a layer of protection against
electromagnetic interference linking into or out of the cable.

Coaxial Cable
This is used today primarily by cable providers to provide a computer with broad band
internet connection. Early on it was used as the backbone for networks such as an bus
network.

Now there are two types of coaxial cable the first type is RJ-6.

RJ-6 is made for long distances and commonly used for cable television and internet connection.

RJ-59- it is made for short distances and commonly used for high definition and high quality video.

SMF (Single Mode Fibre)

Now we are get into the fibre optic cables and here is an cut a way view of a fibre optic
cable and a light source. Fibre optic cable uses pulses of light to send data. And as a result it
is very fast and it can spend for great distances.

Now there are two different modes in fibre optics-

Single mode fibre

Multimode fibre

Single mode fibre is a fibre optic cable that allows a light to enter only at a single angle as you c see
in the picture. So in this type of transmission of light enter at this angle it can spend for great
distances.

MMF (multimode fibre)

Now this is multimode fibre. And a difference between multimode and dingle mode is that
in multimode light travels in multiple beams that reflect ff the walls of the cables. And unlike
single mode fibre, multimode fibre is made for short distances.

Media converter
Sometimes you may need to convert different media types in your network. So if you want a
different type of media such as fibre, ethernet or coaxial within your network. Whether you
can convert internet all this types by using a media converter.
It allows you to convert the different types of media such as converting single and
multimode fibre to ethernet, fibre to coaxial and single mode fibre to multimode fibre and
so on.
