TEST RUN REPORT

EXPERIMENT NO. : 3

EXPERIMENT TITLE: DETERMINATION OF THE MOLAR MASS OF A METAL

PROBLEM: -

SUGGESTION: -

DATA:

Part A: Standardisation of HCl solution

Concentration of NaOH = 1.0 M (for lab assistant)
Volume of HCl = 25 mL

Burette reading / ml Gross I

Final reading 26.70 34.20
Initial reading 0.00 7.50
Volume of NaOH used 26.70 26.70
Volume of NaOH used= 26.70 mL

Part B : Determination of the molar mass of a metal

(i) Reaction of metal with HCl

Mass of metal (sample I) 0.079 g

Mass of metal (sample II) 0.084 g

(ii) Titration of unreacted HCl

Burette reading / ml Sample I Sample II

Final reading 24.10 44.10
Initial reading 4.40 24.10
Volume of NaOH used 19.70 20.00
RESULTS:

1. Calculate the molarity of the standard HCl solution:

Balanced chemical equation: HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) NaOH (aq) + H2O (l)

MaVa = a Ma (25ml) = 1
MbVb b 1.0M (26.70ml) 1
MHCl = 1.07 M

2. Determine the number of moles of HCl in 25mL of the standard solution.

n = (1.07)(25) = 0.0267 mol
1000
3. Number of moles of the unreacted HCl = no. of moles of NaOH reacted
Sample I : (1molL-1)(0.0197L) = 0.0197 mol
Sample II : (1molL-1)(0.02L) = 0.02 mol

4. Number of moles of = no. of moles of HCl in solution – no. of moles of unreacted HCl
the reacted HCl
Sample I : 0.0267 mol - 0.0197 mol = 7 x 10-3 mol
Sample II : 0.0267 mol - 0.0197 mol = 6.7 x 10-3mol

5. From equation; 1 mol of M reacts with 2 mol of HCl

Number of moles of the reacted metal = ½ x no. moles of reacted HCl
Sample I : 7 x 10-3 mol /2 = 3.5 x 10-3 mol
Sample II : 6.7 x 10-3 mol /2 = 3.35 x 10-3 mol

6. Molar mass of metal in each sample:

Sample I : 0.079g / 3.5 x 10-3 mol = 22.6 gmol-1
Sample II : 0.079g / 3.35 x 10-3 mol = 23.8 gmol-1

7. By comparing with the elements in the periodic table, metal M is Magnesium
